that's the one...jeff's a pretty sharp guy, i had no idea he'd fabricated that axle himself. looks like next year's hamb drags will be over run with st louis straight axle cars! you can see bill's yellow stude next to jeff's car, too. he's supposed to have the freak show truck there (hamb drags) next year, and i wouldn't be surprised if he brings his henry j, too...
here's the nova, first time he ever fired it was at bowling green 2005 reunion here in the pictures. he was so happy he drank till about 4 or 5 am after a full day of drinking, at the end of the night he was opening a bottle of champaign with his teeth finally we put him in bed. i think he was excited!!
I really have no reason to stick my nose in this thread, other than I can't help my self from posting on every single Pontiac related thread... Here is my old Henry J. Not a 65 GTO, but it DOES have a straight axle and a big giant PONTIAC motor.. -Abone.
Exactly! You guys got me going and now I'm in the process of going thru my old Drag and Hot Rod magazine collection. I've been finding a ton of straight axle cars in them. Zettle, I hope you wouldn't mind me writing you eventually for some advice too? I'd appreciate it. Those J's are cool cars. A-bone, I think I remember your car from when you were thinking of selling it. Did it end up in Europe?
Thanks man, I appreciate it. I'll email you but what did you guys use for your front axle? What's the center to center distance? What steering box did you use? What frame mods did you do to make it work? Will one of the kits available these days work? Do you have a webpage for your cars? Thx Phil ps - my friends think I'm nuts for doing this. Truth is, I'm tired of breaking drivetrain parts on my present 65 (stick car). I'd like to build a nostalgic car like yours, with an automatic, to bring to all of the Pontiac and Nostalgic events that I can (eastern US). Should be a lot of fun!
Phil, Our front axle is an old Ford Econoline axle. As for all the info on center to center and such will have to measure. Truth is we didn't do any of the front end mod's, it was all there when we bought it. This was a old 60's drag car that ran out of upper state New York. When we bought it from the guy he was going to take the drivetrain out (454 with a 4-speed) and scrap the rest. He didn't think anyone would want some cobbled up Pontiac with a junk straight axle under it. How wrong he was. As for suspension, it has leafs on it and were planning on putting some shocks on sometime in the future. We have a So-Cal steering dampener on it but with not shocks it still likes to jump around alot. Steering box is a Corvair. As for a Website, There should be a Zettle Bros. Speed Shop website after the first of the year. My girlfriend is a graphics designer and is working on it in here spare time. She says paying customers come first!! The site will have some of the customers cars we have painted along with the '63 altered wheelbase Falcon that were working on. The staight axle on that is a Speedway Motors early Ford kit. Thanks again Phil for the interest.
OMG! I can't believe it! Thx for the info. Can't wait for the website. I hope you do a spread on each of your cars. If you have any pics you'd care to share to give me an idea what the front suspension and steering look like, I'd appreciate it. Phil
A dude I know in Ohio is going to take a look at an old 65 GTO drag car for me this weeknd. Bringing his camera. Crossing my fingers...
Well, the guy just sold the frame this week. Not sure if I want to go for it now. It's a Lemans body. How much do you think the body is worth? There was a frame on ebay that didn't sell in Kansas. I just wrote the guy. Might be too much trouble to even deal with it. http://216.178.81.108/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=33280&stc=1 http://216.178.81.108/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=33281&stc=1 http://216.178.81.108/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=33282&stc=1 http://216.178.81.108/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=33283&stc=1
Looks like a lot of stuff missing. Without a frame I'm really not sure what it would be worth. Quarters look ok but that is about it. Might be worth waiting for something else.
OMFG AHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAH let me pickmysef up off the floor....wait...hang on a sec...I drunk..AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HAHAHHAH A HEARD OF TURTLES!!!! AHAHAHHA Sounds like my project. AHHHHHHHHHAHAHAHHAHAH. And that is more Patina Than I ever care to handle. Thank you. But if it does have a Tri power intake I'll buy ittt.!
http://www.draglist.com/artman/publish/daily_stories/article_001296.shtml straight axled 65 goats rock- remember the Brutus GTO ?
this was the picture i was looking for.....i think some guy named liberman (sp) drove this .....brandon
Brandon, your right "Jungle Jim" Liberman drove the Brutus car. Mickey Thompson did a lot of tuning on the car including putting a pair of "Hemi" heads on the Pontiac motor.
Thx, Hey - if you want I can post a complete article from a 1966 Drag Mag on how to build a 65 GTO Funny Car. Plus I have scanned other cool Pontiac articles. I can even email anyone that shit too. Just ask... Phil
