  2. :rolleyes:Well, I gotta be completely honest here. It's a combination of concern and a lack of anything else this entertaining and interesting to read on the internet!

    More About Temptation
Early in the days of Temptation, still as it came from the factory, we had a race at a track in Wichita Falls in North Texas. We were pulling our 22' travel trailer behind the car hauling truck, so when supper time came, so did most of the people in the pits. We fed so many people that evening, well till the food was gone. Everyone ended the day will full tummies and a big smile on their faces.

We had a couple with us from home and my Dad was along. He always joined us on the races that we had in our area, like Green Valley, Whitehouse at Tyler, Houston, most any place that was a 4 or 5 hour drive from home. It was getting late so time to set up housekeeping for the night and who was sleeping where. We gave our bed to our friends and Dad slept on the couch. Us??? Well, we made a place under our truck for sleeping bags. It was dark and it looked like a nice smooth place, no rocks. I had just about drifted off when my wife shook me and said she heard a rattlesnake. No hun, there's no snake, just go to sleep, and if one comes along, I have my 357 under my pillow.

We wake up to the roar of loud exhaust, what a way to start the day. My wife looks around and says HEY!!!...people in the stands on the other side of the track are looking at us with binoculars....have you every tried to dress inside a sleeping bag? With the sun beaming down we are getting sweaty and trying to get our clothes on inside that sleeping bag under the truck, just not an easy chore. I had side boxes built along the bottom of the truck bed so not a lot of wiggle room.

It was funny looking back, but not very funny that morning. When we finally got out and stood up, we received a standing ovation from the trackside crowd. My wife was so embarrassed and turned as red as a beet. I told her to just wave and smile and take a bow, no problem. We get moving and she makes breakfast for everyone in the county, at least it looked that way. We learned two very important lessons on that trip....always carry extra food and never sleep under your truck without doing some scouting of the area first.

But hey we had fun!!!! Until next time, stay tuned.....

i know this is off WAYDAR and his subject,,,,,,,,but years ago i met jud ivancovics he was with dearborn, michigan's bob ford's 427 s/s car les ritchie, driver. jud could keep your attention for hours with drag racing effort. there have to be lotsa stories out there similar to WAYDAR's!
almost forgot i worked at ford's livonia transmission plant 1965---they had the ? phil bonner's daddywarbucks running 'hot laps' on the test track---trying to break the C6 transmission!
also -the plant manager's son ?warren tope? was running a 'back door' boss 302 trans am race car out of the experimental garage in 1970. he 'lost his head' in a trans am race in streets of pontiac michigan.

  10. Wayne-

Just found this site a couple days ago with some info about old dragstrips in Michigan. Here's a link to the page about Detroit Dragway.

    http://www.waterwinterwonderland.com/drags.asp?id=1335&type=6

Scroll about 3/4 of the way down the page and you'll see a pic with the caption "JAY HOWELL DRIVING DICK BRANSTNER'S DART". The name wouldn't have meant anything to me if I hadn't been reading your posts. Haven't found any pics of "Temptation" on there yet, but I ain't done lookin' yet either!

Thanks for passing along the great stories.

Wayne, thanx for the great stories. I remember your trips to Wichita Falls. Got some photos somewhere. Were you there racin' Van der Woude's Flyin' Dutchmen when he broke the left rear wheel plumb off the rear end??

Interesting that you are flying RC planes, Ed Hill is deep into that stuff since he "retired".

Did you ever get over to Kelly Chadwicks's mom and dad's house in Iowa Park?? About 5 blocks from my folks house, used to ride our bikes over there and gawk at his Rat Motor Chevelle on the ramp truck. Pretty fast school teacher!!

    Thanks again, K

I couldn't agree more!!! There is a treasure of history here and we need to ensure that it doesn't fade into a black hole.

Mr Waydar, I've been a Hamb member since the late 90's, and last i heard i was number 30 on the membership list. I have got to tell ya, this has been one of my top ten favorite threads i have seen on here ! Great stuff, and thanks so very much for taking the time to write us.

Tell me, while staying in Fullerton did you ever meet my good friend Jess Tyree ? He is a fellow Pontiac guy who used to own a Header shop on Chapman - just east of Harbor.

Also, how often did you run up against Arnie Beswicks "Tameless Tiger" ?

A lot of us Hambers hope to see you back here soon !

Jess Tyree came to Australia with his '67 Pontiac Firebird F/C, he toured with Bill Shewsberry and E J Potter and put on a great show. One of my fondest memories is of him doing his first run at the Surfers Paradise track, he laid down a great burnout then stopped and prepared to reverse back when the fans started to boo and cat call. The fans thought he had broken something in the car and calls of of "Go home yank" etc could be heard, he reversed back and did the run and the spectators eventually realised they had just seen their first 'Burnout'. I spoke to Jess about this a few years ago at the CHRR and his reply was that he wondered about that at the time and had not realised the reason for the commotion. Priceless.
