I believe yours has the variable pitch stall convertor and pump.....standard 400's do not.

Actually an ST400 and a TH400 are very similar, the SP400 is the switch pitch.

Yep. ST's have switch pitch torque converters and TH's don't. Think there's a minor difference in the front pump too. Ask HAMBer shifts.

Its been my experience(63,64(2 of them),65 rivis and an electra (currently).that the switch pitch was'nt stock inthe rivs til late 65-66 model year.
so in answer to the querry the major diffs are an early style filter and nailhead specific bell housing bolt pattern.
also, the la sabre and other cars had switch pitch but were st300s
    hope this helps....... [IMG]

The st 300 that was in My Skylark was a two peed like a powerglide aluminum case but it had horible gear ratio's and a switch pitch converter to make up for the shitty gears. All that equals about 7-8 miles to the gallon. The st 400's were three speed versions with swith pitch. As far as I know not many parts from a th 400 swap over but I think that the tranny's are the same dimensions so a th 400 will swap in with little to no mods.
I am currently putting a th350 in my skylark along with a chevy 350. The th350's are the same dimensions as the st 300.
Oh yeah you probably already know but dont forget that st400's have the B.O.P. bellhousing.
By the way did you get my PM or E-mail.

You Know I forgot about the nailhead thing Different bellhousing as far as I know. I knwo the st300 is not the same as the 400 but I know my st300 was damn strong. I beat the piss out of that thing daily and never had a problem other than the poor gas mileage and sluggish starts. But more than a few times the car would die at a stop light when it was cold and in drive so I had to rev it up in nuetral and drop it in to gear. Made a funny sound going in but launched like a motherfucker after that and would still shift fine after 120000 miles and no record of being rebuilt.
Hope this jibberish helps a little

Except for the swith pitch converter and a few front pump differences, the rest of the trans is the same as the TH400.

64, first year for the ST400, has a unique valve body. Not bad, just unique. 65-up are the same.

Any turbo 400 is a good trans. The switch pitch are even better.
