Anyone done one of these? I found a 2 dr hardtop, with the 301? 300? something like that (I'm not a buick guy). The interior is original and only small tear on driver seat, paint is decent, small dent on pass qtr panel. 3 speed on the column. I can see it slammed on supremes, but anyone else got a picture? Oh, btw, what's it worth? I can get for less than $1000

If you can get a '65 GM A-body two door hardtop for under $1000, you're stupid not to do so. If you can get a running one for under $1000, you're a complete retard not to. Buy it. Do it up as a mild '60 custom like you say, supremes with skinny whites and a heavy drop and you're set.

Not quite the same, but I've got a '64 Cutlass. These A-bodies are easy to get parts for, have -very- good parts interchangeability with other GM stuff, and look damn good as 2 door hardtops.

I've got a '65 Skylark convertible project that's kinda on the back burner right now.

They are good running cars...the 300 cid motor is essentially a larger version of the 215 cid motor that was used in Buicks and in Rovers up until a few years ago. The '65 300 is all cast iron, but if you wanted you could find aluminum heads and intake off of a '64 and install them as a direct bolt on. The 300 in my car is suprisingly strong even with the 2spd automatic. The 300 is often called the "baby nailhead" because of the valve covers, but they are not considered part of the larger displacement nailhead family.

As far as styling goes, this is one of the best styled cars of the mid '60s in my opinion. It's almost a factory custom with the tube-like grille, peaked hood, and very custom-looking interior.

If you can get it for $1000 or less and it's as nice as you say it is, then I think you'd be a fool not to buy it.

Here's a pic of my convert as it was about a year ago...it's going to look a lot different when I get going on it again. I took the American 5 spokes off and I think I'm going to go with chrome wheels and spiders on narrow whites. I've got too many projects!

  4. Damn Bass, I liked that car the way it was a year ago!!! Very good looking car and I have to agree with you, one of the best looking from the 60's. I was surprised however to hear that you thought the 300 surprisingly strong, I had always heard they were dogs. You relit my fire to get a 65 skylark, thank you.

Well, maybe I should clarify that part...it'll chirp the tire(s)...but it won't put you back in the seat too hard.

I still say it's a decent runner though...just not too fast. Now if you were to find say a '65 Gran Sport (401 nailhead), then we could talk fast. A few minor mods and you were in the 13's with one of those.

I'll also say that one thing to watch out for with the 300 motors is warped exhaust manifolds. Any machine shop can get 'em flat again, but it's still a pain in the ass.

First pic I've seen of your Skylark Bass, that car looks good. '64/5's are my favorite years for Buicks.
