Heh heh heh. Yep, I was worried about that, measured the opening like 1000 times! I haven't actually bolted them up but the two of us set the door in the opening and it fits just fine, room for adjustment all around when the latch is engaged. Still will feel 100% better when they are in there though!

Yep, checked my keychain, looks like it may have lived in Missouri in the past. Cool keychain anyway, we'll definitely keep hanging the keys off it:

So now it was time to spin the old girl around and start fixing the rust on the passenger side of the cab. Like I said, the drivers side was a whole lot worse, so this should go a lot quicker. Just needs floor pan, kick panel, floor supports, rocker, and part of the front pillar. None of the under dash areas need attention like they did on the other side.

Heres where we started on the passenger side:

So far, I have cut out the old floor, welded in a new one, and started cutting the kick panel and a little work on the pillar.

And that brings up to current, at least for now. I'll keep updating here when I get things done.......

Lovin' this. I can SO relate. Is your son helping out on all this patch work? Hope so - rust repair is a great way to learn sheetmetal fabbing. With a keyfob like this truck has, you guys can't lose!

Got a little done on the front pillar this weekend. Its been cold and snowy, so I haven't been out there as much as I would have liked.

    Heres the rust I'm fixing:

First thing was to cut out the bad:

Then made a new piece out of sheet metal.

And then weld it in and grind...Done and done.

I think I''ll put the new rocker on next....

  10. Dude... Spot that sucker with some red oxide primer and stripe & letter it up. Run it like that for a couple years and then paint it later. That way you can show off all your fancy metal work for awhile...:D

You can't beat the price, thats for sure. Although sometimes I think I would have been better off spending the bucks to get one in better shape to start with.

Of course, thats not the point, is it? I was feeling a little discouraged at one point, and my son told me he was glad we got this truck, cause nobody else was gonna save it. And it does feel pretty good to be keeping her alive for a few more years....

Love this project! I read through everything at work, but didn't see any pics. Once I got home and saw the pics, it wasn't nearly as bad as I had expected. Looks like most Kentucky trucks would look.

Thats a really cool truck for your boy. Start him out right! I'm 25 now and still have the 54 Chevy truck my grandpa helped me build, starting when I was 14. I don't figure I'll ever sell it. I learned more working on that truck than just mechanics. I learned alot of history, alot about character, alot about work ethic, and I got a lot stronger bond with my grandpa.

Have a ball, guys! Keep up the pics!

Been doing a little more work on the truck, but not as much as I would like. My real job has been wicked busy....

But I did manage to get the front door pillar a little closer to done. I cut out and repaired some thin spots by the hinge bolt holes, and also replaced the basket that holds the hinge backing plate. The way it works is theres a steel plate with three threaded holes in it that the hinge bolts to. Theres a sheet metal cage that holds it roughly in place, allowing it to slide around for door adjustments. Heres the general idea:

As you can see, the cage is pretty rusted out, and in fact it had completed rotted off the wall of the pillar. As soon as I took the hinge bolts out, it fell to the bottom of the door post. I fabricated a new one using the old one as a template and welded it in place.

That pretty much makes the pillar ready to put the rocker on and I then I'll put the patch on the kick panel. Slow and steady, but she's getting there...

One thing I learned is that you can make just about anything if you need too. Its nice to know, makes the project seem so much easier over all. If you're building cars, you need to at least learn rudimentary metal fab skills and welding...Its so much better if you can do it yourself!

Made a little more progress, slow and steady, right? Hopefully this week I'll be able to kick it into high gear.

First thing is my son and I have started replacing the brake lines, once thats done and the master cylinder is installed, that will finally be finished. But its boring, so no pics.

I have made some more progress on the rust repair in the cab though...The floor pan is in, and I have welded up the kicker panel as well, the front column is basically done...For some reason I couldn't weld for shit on the kick panel, its in there but its ugly. Oh well, can't win em all, and its not gonna be high visibility anyway...Also got the rocker panel in. Heres what she looks like as of this afternoon.

So close I can taste it now. Just gotta get the stuff under the cab (floor braces, inner rocker panel) and a few misc holes in the vent intake area, and I am done with welding. In the cab anyway...

Also, my neighbor was scrapping out his '62 Chevy and let me pull what I wanted off of it for a bottle of R&R...Good deal. It was pretty far gone, but there was a few bits I managed to get my hands on that I'm happy with.

First off, I pulled the heater. Its a deluxe model, with the four levers, so I'm gonna try and fit it in place of the Thrift model that mine had to begin with.

Also scored these Custom Cab trim pieces, I haven't decided if I'll put them on our truck or not, if not they should be good for $50 or so of beer money...

Also scored another set of door handles and pulled the glovebox door. It won't fit my dash, but its in good shape and cool looking, maybe somebody else will want it or maybe it'll get used in another project someday.

But the best thing, and something I will definitely be using, is this deluxe steering wheel...Its got the chrome horn ring, and is in great shape, paints worn but no chips or cracks...It is missing the center cap though, if anybody has one or knows where to get one I would really appreciate the info! Also pulled the turn signal and column trim stuff, thats all missing on mine. It had toggle switches on the dash for signals when I got it....

Not a bad score over all...

Looking good almost a solid cab again :D. I will agree with Butchers it looks like a Kentucky truck heck I think you had more good sheetemtal in that one than I have in my 62 Uni . I am gonna have to replace everything from the firewall back underneath.

Great work! You have your hands full with that patching. It's awesome that you and your son can enjoy this project together! I too was a product of cars at an early age. Every son and father should work on some type of a project together.

Subscribed! Great father son project! My dad and I did the engine, trans, and all the "hot roddding" of my '53 when I was in high school. I drove it my senior year in high school. My son is only 2, but I look forward to building him something!

    Keep the updates coming!

Looks good.. I'll be following along.. Hey, you don't have a pull (choke style) heater
knob that you want to get rid of, do you? Mine broke, and I can't find a replacement
    knob.

I had a straight six in mine originally, and after I had the head rebuilt, and slapped it
on, it blew oil out the pipes like crazy. It would coat the tail gate, if I left it down.
Needless to say, that motor was replaced, later on down the road..

It's funny ...a deluxe steering wheel on a 60's C10 truck is a base unit Biscayne wheel!

Yep, we are looking at doing it in Hot Rod Flatz, the steel blue color. Then add Tommy the Greek style scallops on teh hood and fenders. Steel wheels with '67 hubcaps. Interior is going to be black, white trim. But it'll be a while still till we paint teh exterior, probably next summer.
