I have had almost no time to work on the old girl over the last month. Just a little welding that is really not very visually interesting. But all I have left on the cab for now is the two pass side floor braces, the right rear cab floor edge, and a rust hole on the passenger vent box.

Also, look for a significant increase in the rate of work, my son is 16 in August and I really want the truck to be driveable when he gets his license!

Cool build with your son. What about the stance of the truck? Will it stay stock or are you going to lower it? it would look cool dropped a couple of inches with hub caps and the scolloped paint. Good work

Gonna leave it stock height for now, might drop it a few inches down the road. David likes the stock stance though...

For the steering wheel stuff - I learned the interchange years ago from an article on Jiom Carter Truck Paarts's website. I just saw your thread here and found the link for you:

    http://www.oldchevytrucks.com/blog/2010/02/deluxe-steering-wheels/

That does make it easier to find the parts, either NOS on ebay or used...
When someone advertises the horn ring or cap off of a 1959-60 base-model car, they go cheap...sometimes (unless saavy truck peopl are looking!).
If you find them on IDd right for the truck, they go for more.

GM recyles some parts. Same part # for the wheel, ring and cap, both uses.

I thought my truck was bad, keep up the great work. That is a ton of metal work and it is nicely done. I look forward to the updates... keep it up!

Hit a milestone today. I just finished making the last welds in the cab repair. At least for now, I will revisit the cab corners when I start making the body pretty, but I am DONE with the floor repair. Took almost a year doing a little here, a little there......But now its on to cleaning up and painting in there, then wiring, then the seat and gas tank, then new rubber on the windshield, then the doors...I'm at the tipping point where I start putting it back together instead of cutting it up. Feels good. You can see most of the detail work above, but here's a few over all shots in celebration...

I tried to get some from underneath, but I just couldn't get enough at once to be worthwhile. Should start seeing visible improvement pretty quick now!

Now that the welding is done, we've started getting the interior of the cab ready to paint. I ordered white and black Hot Rod Flatz from TCP Global, got some spray guns at the same time, so we should be ready to give it a go soon. Also started knocking the rust off the inside, I'm wire brushing it, then sanding till its smooth, then hitting it with rust converter. Before we spray the primer, we'll sand it smooth again.

Here's the before and after shot to show how much rust I'm talking about. Only 95% of the cab still to scrape...woo hoo!

  15. Nice project. I ran those same carbs on my 68 250 that I had in my 50 Chevy sedan. You will like them!!

Thanks, will do. I'm kind of cheating a little by using a flat paint for my first shoot, it hides the newbie errors a little better! But we both liked the flat look anyway, so its all good.

Very cool, thanks for the pics. Nice to know it actually can be done. Looking at my cab everyday it just seems to look like more and more work. Keep the pics coming...

    Great build! I am subscribed...

My philosophy is like yours; Make it safe and reliable first, then make it look pretty. Trouble is....I usually never get around to the "making it look pretty" stage.

BTW, the grin on your son's face is priceless!

    Good job, Dad!

Shadams, hang in there. Think of it as a lot of little jobs, concentrate on one at a time. Today I will get the drivers floor cut out. Next job is fitting that pan, etc etc etc. Eventually you have it done. The whole project is overwhelming if you think of it all at once.

Al Von, thanks. I have really enjoyed working with him on it. He hasn't been in the shop too much over the winter, he is in a couple AP classes and has been swamped with homework, but schools out tomorrow and I think we'll have a lot more time.

I spoke too soon, had to weld in one more patch. While I was wire brushing around the windshield frame, I found a rotten spot over the drivers side in the "eyebrow" of the cab.

Same idea as before, cut out the bad....Once I had it open, I fund the source of the rust. There was a giant mouse nest made out of seat stuffing in there. But I got it pulled out using an old coat hanger and cleaned up the hole for repair. Not my cleanest cut ever...

Burned a little welding wire, spent some time with the grinder, now all it needs is a skim coat of filler and some paint.

Nice work man. Good to see your son is working on it with you. I kinda wish I hadn't found this thread though. You're gonna make me want to tear my C10 down now.

We're gonna go with Hot Rod Flatz steel blue for an exterior color with white scallops, black wheels with white stock caps and whitewalls, interior will be black with white accents and matching white scallops on the dash. Tommy the Greek style...Should be laying interior paint in the next few weeks, exterior will probably get a coat of primer till next summer, more rust to address there before paint goes on. I'd leave it green till then but I have to replace the doors and hood, they are too far gone to be functional, and I hate when the truck has three different colors of body panel.

No, and I feel a little bad about that. He has been way too busy over the school year with homework etc to be able to learn to weld AND still have the truck done by his birthday in August. I will get him on the welder when we do the bed and cab corners etc, the truck will be rolling by then and there won't be such a time issue.
