OK, so I pulled the trigger and up-graded my '55 Ford Country Sedan (272) ignition with a Pertronix kit (and coil) this past Tuesday. Car fired right up! However, from directions included with the kit, You Tube videos, and my mechanic brother, they all say the timing may need adjustment following installation. I do not own a 6v. timing light. The engine seemed to be idling fairly normal. (At least it sounded the same to me.) Is it possible that the timing remained the same? I mean, the rotor was in the same place when I re-installed it. Is there a way to check? Thanks, Mato
It might need adjustment, but heck, folks have been setting timing by ear for years. If it sounds good to you I'll bet it's good!
If your in the market for a timing light I've heard good things from the battery powered ones. Or you could get a vacuum gauge and tune it that way.
I 've got two timing light, one from the seventy's and one from the eighties. Both work on my 6 Volt positive ground Ford. I hook up to the battery cables the same way as I would a 12 volt negative ground, positive to positive and negative to negative one to number one plug and start the car. They both work great, very bright and dead on. You could try a newer gun just to see. I mean what could happen? BUT, to be on the safe side have some one there to kill the power.
