Manual said to continue using original starter till it whent, so its fried but now which starter can I use to replace the 6v. The motor is the straight 6cyl 235. Off of which car or should I use the starter, any info would help thanx...:D:confused::confused:

6 volt Chevy starters have a flywheel gear with 139 teeth,12 volts have 160 ish teeth. You can't use a 12 volt starter as is on a 6 volt flywheel. The starter drives won't interchange between 6 and 12 volt that i know of. You can have a starter shop rewind your starter for 12 volts I suppose.
My 50 Chevy pu is 12 volts using the original 6 volt starter for the last three years.I've had no problems with it,but I don't crank it very long.Guys tell me the brushes wear faster,I checked them out, they were ok ,I keep a new set around just in case.
If you can dis***emble the starter yourself ,check it out, might just brushes

What he said. I've had 2 6V starters rebuilt as 12V units by a starter/generator shop. Not on the same car or engine type!:D
