So I have my rebuilt and souped up flathead. Shouldn’t be any more than 9.5:1 compression. Stock 6v starter rebuild professionally. I am using a 12v battery. And this motor won’t crank more than 5 revolutions before it slows down and won’t crank any more. On a fully charged (13v) battery!! What the hell! I’m killing myself over this. Can anyone please tell me what’s going on

    Are the cables heavy enough?
Are the grounds clean and making a real good connection?

    Those are the usual suspects.

Cables are standard 12v jumper cables. And I will go double check the grounds right now

  4. My experience is that jumper cables don't make near a good enough connection if you are just hooking them to battery posts and a starter stud. If all else is good (it sounds like it is) proper cable connections will make a difference you will notice.

100% right! Connected it properly and it cranked the balls out of it! Thanks so much! Now I know

  7. When Greybeard 360 mentioned heavy cables he was probably talking about the cables on the car. Not the jumper cables. Same with the grounds. *Two cents.

My son and I bought him a 50 Chev when he was in HS 1985. After the guy got it started, was a *****, and the price was coming down, everything looked new; I drove it and my son followed me in our pickup. When we got home I had my son watch as it would not start. I had some 2/0 welder cable and made 2 new ones for the car and added a short smaller one from the engine to the body. Never failed to start again. He learned voltage and amperage that day.

And I learned it tonight. Haha. Noticed that the shorter jumper cable was better than the long one. Haha

Should be driving in a month or two. I need to get it running and figure out the fuel system. And finish requiring it. But I’m sure when I hear this motor run I will have a boost of motivation to get it all done.
