I did a search for this, buy struck out. I have a pair of normal 4" wide-five wheels on the back. Are 7.50's too much? I have some 6.00-16 tires on there now, and the sidewalls are pretty fat.
I have a pair of 7.50 X 16 Firestone Deluxe Champion tires on the back of my 1932 roadster that are mounted on 4 inch wheels. They look absolutely perfect. The 7.50 tires are much taller than the 6.00 tires so the sidewalls spread out just a little bit more. Before I got the 7.50's mounted I was thinking exactly what you are thinking now, that the tires are too wide for the 4 inch wheels. I looked at photos of cars here on the HAMB with tires mounted on them and decided to mount the 7.50's I had on the 4 inch wheels. To me the wheel and tire combination with a hubcap mounted in the centre looks to be the perfect combination and gets that traditional look that everyone here wants to have.
I'll try to get a better pic but these are 16x4 kelseys with 6.00's on the front and 7.50's on the rear, i think they look just fine
Cool, thanks. I have a lot to do, but i really need to see what it's going to look like. Tires are moving up the list...
This site has a suggested Rim Width: 4.5-5.5" https://www.millertire.com/7-00-16-firestone-deluxe-champion-hwy-rib-truck-tire-6-ply/ I'd guess a 4" isn't too narrow, considering it's a hot rod hooligan doing this on a light car, not a truck. @silent rick , nice ride!
I have had also 750 tires on a 4" rim many times and works fine. I guess the theory is tread width to rim width. In the 1970s with all the creative pot smokers (I quit toking in 1980) building killer Hot Rods it was a 10" rim with 8" tread width.
Some good pics in this thread when I asked about 8.20’s on 4.5” rims https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/8-20x15-tires-on-4-5”-wide-rim-yay-or-nay.1343377/
Interesting. When looking at tires last month, I thought I read that 7.50s could not be mounted on 4” rims. I went with 8.20 x 15, but going with a 15 x 6 wide five rim. Tire wrapped up in tape/plastic looks narrow to me.
