You can't eliminate the 'electronics' on a 4L60E. It's an electronic transmission by design. That's what the E stands for at the end of the name. You can get controllers for the 4L60E ...they are electronic.

If your are using a 700R-4 (now called the 4L60), with a lockup converter, you will want a vacuum switch to unlock the converter at low vacuum levels, as well as a brake switch to unlock the converter when you push the brake pedal. I've just ran a regular old on/off switch with these other two switches wired in series. Just turn off the power when your not on the freeway. You will need to remove the pan and discover where in the 4 cavity connector the TCC circuit is. You only need to supply power to it (after the power goes through all of your switches).

Or you can just buy a lockup kit. I'd run a lockup converter though. The trans will generate much more heat in overdrive without the converter locked up.

  2. At the price of fuel nowadays, I think it's money well spent to have the lock-up feature. If you're doing a lot of highway driving, even a drop of 200-500 rpm will make a difference in fuel mileage. Over a period of time, the kit will pay for itself.

I do agree with the earlier comment about disabling the lock-up feature when you get past a certain horsepower (450-500 horsepower) level. They weren't really designed to support a high horsepower application, but for a mild street car, they are excellent.

very similar 200R. I go the $75 TCI kit. Its easy to put in. There were several ways to run it on the lock up feature. I did the easiest. You run a hot wire to ignition and 4th gear engages. My little 55 flys down the highway with the 3.55 gears

I have a transmission shop and I can tell you that the lockup controller from Bowler Transmission is the best and easiest one out there to date for lockup control. It will apply lockup 8 MPH after 4th gear. Very simple to install. Just drop the pan, replace the solenoid ***m, and a pressure switch. The module plugs into the case connector and has ONE wire to hook up, and change the brake switch to a dual stage switch. One stage for lockup and one for the brake light. The kit is around 180.00

Generally speaking, you can run a lockup converter in the unlocked mode without problems if you keep it cool. If you run a converter without the lockup clutch, you should have the p***age for the lockup solenoid blocked to maintain fluid to the rear planets. Otherwise you are living on the edge.

I know asking this question leaves me open for cheap shots, but I will ask anyway. On my local CL I see people advertising different size shafts and that their 700R4 came out of a 4X4. Are there different sized tail shafts and would it make a difference if it came out of a 4WD? Thanks for the thread.

Yes, here is a C4 Corvette extension housing and output shaft when compared to an Impala SS. I had to change both when I installed a Corvette 700R into my '46 Olds. I believe 4WDs are different again due to transfer case.

H,i I'm a long way from any expert on auto's but I worked at a chevy dealer in the 80's. the 700 and 200 r are a great ****** What I learnd is to set up the tv cable with a high pressure gauge, find the tap its there. set it up so you can see it while you drive. yes I know its a pain. next,if you want to play with the loud pedal,[I just love that]. put that ****** in first gear only, that prevents the sprague clutch from working. if you don't it gets real ugly. I run a 29 model a,blown 270 dodge baby hemi, 9 inch with 3.00 posi. bought a stock 700R out of a 85 camaro. I dont bother with the lockup conv. bought a 2 foot round alumn.finned cooler, installed it in the most airflow. that thing will cruise at 80 mph 1800 rpm all day long. I LOVE IT John

I am running a 700r4 with lock up and as mentioned the TV cable geometry and set up is crucial if set incorrectly you can fry the ****** in short order, once set up it is recommended to do a pressure test. The whole reason I ran a 700r4 is the for the overdrive for lower rpms at highway speeds and the fact it has a nice low first gear. here are a few good sites with lots of good info here on the 700r4
