I was wondering if anyone knew if I could take a 700R4 transmission and hook it to a 235 Chevy inline 6. I love my little inline, however I am getting tired of shifting gears. Overdrive sure does sound nice... Any help would be greatly appreciated.
There is a company up in Arlington, Washington called Buffalo Enterprises that can help with an adapter for this swap. I have looked into it a time or two myself, and will probably be doing it soon. I plan a 200r4 though. 360 652 7684
Yep Buffalo would be the guy to call. By the way, I think the 200 4R might be the tranny to use. It's the same size as the 350 and is a better fit. The 700 R4 might be too long. I have the 200 4R in my convertible and it sits snug as a bug between the X in the center of the frame. So, it should be fine in a standard chassis. dom
I've never used a 200R4 before. Is the only difference the size. Do they still have overdrive? What did they come out of? Thanks
Yes they did. That's what the R4 implies. They came in just about every passenger car application GM did in the eighties and ninties. They also use allot less horse power to do their magic than the 700R4 did.
Just had a friend do that with the 250 in his '54 Chevy truck. Went from a 2.6something rear axle and TH350. to a 200R4 and a 3.55 rear.... Major improvement! Gets out of it's own way pretty damn well now, and picked up some MPG on the freeway as well!
I'm sure the 700 R4s came in some desirable rides, but I know my 200 4R came from a Monte Carlo and are also found in the Grand National. Dom
Be sure to get one with the Chevy bell pattern. I'm thinking G bodies are the most common place to find them.
I'm no tranny expert, just a guy who has installed both. Unless you already have a T350 installed, making for a much easier swap for the 200R, I think you might like the gearing in a 700R4 better, especially first gear. Yes, they are longer by about 2 3/34" and the mount is 2" further back than the T350. Unless you get the Monte SS or Grand National styled 200R, I would prefer the 700 myself but that's just me.
The 2004R also has a better 1st gear and ratio split....... especially for a 6 cyl. The 700 has a LOW first gear, I have a 700 in my '33, it'll have a 2004R next time around.
