I have about 350 shakedown miles on my panel truck and yesterday, after driving about 120 miles, I parked on a real steep driveway. When I came out, tranny fluid was leaking at a pretty good rate out of what looked like the tail shaft. A dude that was there said it was probably the tailshaft seal and I'd just need to take the driveshaft back off and replace the seal and it's about 4 bucks. Does this sound right? it's a '93 700r4. Thanks

Could be the seal, but I've had this problem more than once on a fresh 700r4 when parked on a hill. There may be a tiny weep hole right in the middle of your yoke, if there is that then that is 99% likely the source of your leak. I've plugged it with a small machine screw/thread sealant and also just with a dab of sealant with success.

I've heard different stories about why it is there and what it does, also that some 700R4's are equipped with some kind of leak-back baffle and others aren't. But the concensus is that it won't hurt anything to plug it.

I just repaired a leaky rear seal on a '86 700r4. You could have a bad seal. Cost $3 at Oreillys. When you pull the yoke out of the tranny check the yolk for a groove where the seal rides. If there is a groove there replace the yoke and the seal. There should be no leaks even if the car is on an incline.

My 700r4 had a seal inside the tail housing on the main shaft,to seal the inside of the yoke.

OK so this is probably stealing the thread but mine is leaking at the other end. It has new seals and gaskets, was gone through by a fellow very familiar with the breed. I have it mounted behind a 259 Studebaker with an adapter plate. the info said to shim the TQ back (likely to account for the thickness of the plate) from the flex plate. I used a couple of flat washers on each mounting point which spaced it back a bit. After I stated it, after about 15 minutes i noticed a leak. I moved the truck out into the driveway ad tured it around and reparked it int he garage. Over the winter it has leaked about 4 ounces just sitting there. Planning to put in som more spacers, do you thing this will move the TC back far enough to establish a better contact withthe seal?? Hope so pulling it would be a bummer.
