i have read some past posts on this ******. a short story- i bought a 48 ply with a 350 /700r4 combo. the seller drove it from kentucky to wisconsin for the sale. i drove it to a couple car shows with no problems. then, it stopped shifting into the upper end. i just removed the pan and the unit looks ok[fluid does not smell burned]. there is some indication of a sludgey [very minor]deposit. this ****** was not hooked up to a shift linkage when i got it. [the cable is there] nor was or is it hooked up to any elec connection to the three wire connector from the ****** housing. my ?? are, can i get the wire harness from ,like jegs or summit to fix or do i even need to and what would the hambs do for next move be fore sending to a shop? i have tried experimenting with the cable adj from what i have read and seen on the hambm but to no adj seems to fix issue. thanks in advance for any response to my issue.

Sounds like you may need to install a lockup kit as well as getting the electrics and TV cable hooked up to the carburetor. Many will have their own ideas where to purchase said parts. I went to www.bowtieoverdrives.com and read everything I could find concerning the proper setup including a new TV cable, TV spring, lockup kit, cable mounting bracket as well as the correct carburetor throttle bracket for your carburetor. Good luck with that man. Mike

When you say " upper end " do you mean that the converter isn't locking up? If so , the first thing to check is the fluid level. Actually, if you don't have any electrical connection to the transmission, I don't believe you could have ever had the converter locking up since the lockup solenoid in the transmission needs a signal. These transmissions are supposedly very sensitive to the throttle position which is relayed to the transmission by the cable. Adjustment of the cable is simple provided you have the correct carb. throttle geometry. Its usually just one adjustment for idle position and one for wide open throttle. Get on line and go to BowtieOverdrives.com They have all kinds of online information about the 700R4 which explains exactly what you need to know.

There are two pressures control a 700R4 shifts. TV pressure and governor pressure. As you apply throttle the cable is pulled and moves the throttle valve cable inside the valve body increasing TV pressure. At the back of the trans there is a governor valve that is driven off the output shaft. As speed increases the governor spins faster off the output shaft. Once the governor pressure exceeds the TV pressure the 1-2 shfit valve is able to move directing pressure to the 2-4 band servo allowing a 2nd gear shift. The relationship between the TV pressure and governor pressure remains the same for all upshifts. If your cable adjustment is good then I would check the governor.Remove the cover and pull the governor out. Look at the green plastic helical gear for wear or stripped teeth. Also check to make sure the valve inside the governor move freely and next make sure the weights and springs at the end are not broken or missing. Most likely if the cable and governor are OK then you have an internal failure.
The transmission will still shift if your TCC is not hooked up but if you drive with the converter clutch not locked for extended periods you could build up excessive heat which could shorten the life of your transmission

I second and third what everybody says about bowtieoverdrives.com I have a 2004r in my 1969 C-10 and bought everything from them that I needed to make it work correctly. They aren't the cheapest but when your done you know it will work properly. Plus they have a ton of technical info on their website and they will answer questions over the phone if you really get stumped.

If you drove it with out the TV cable hooked up, you fried the insides. I bought a Vette last year that some Bozo had the TV cable hooked up wrong, it didn't have the proper bracket to adjust the cable right. Needless to say, but I didn't get it adjusted the right way soon enough because I didn't know it was wrong, it burned out the OD in about 500 miles. That is probably what happened to yours.

Pulling and putting the govenor cover takes some consideration, many diyer types tend to crush the cover and take the thrust travel out of the gov. ***y. resulting in bad problems. 4L60E is so much sweeter, like they say, bucks or ********.
