Need a little advice from our resident tranny folks. I worked on the car today to try to remedy a problem that I've had since rebuild. My 700R4 shifts way too soon. Holds 1st OK, doesn't stay in 2nd long enough and shifts into 3rd at 30-35mph, and them immediately into OD around 35-40. I've tried to adjust the TV cable with no luck. I changed the governor today and noticed no difference. Any guesses? The transmission doesnt slip and shifts manually just fine.
Driving it in what manner? Hard into it or easy on the gas. I would guess easy on the gas as that's the way mine shifts if I'm taking it easy. 1-2 shift is across the intersection or less, 2-3 is 20-25mph and OD at 40mph. Had it one time where it wouldn't shift the 1-2 until almost 25mph at very light throttle that's hell in town driving in my opinion. Also what gear and tire size are you running? I'm running 255/60 x15 with a 3.42 gear.
Mine acts the same way. 295-50-15 with a 4:10. I'm thinking I don't have the correct geometry on the carb bracket the cables hook to. Was going to try and adapt a stock bracket to my linkage. anyone else using home made bracket?
I talked to the guy that built the transmission this morning. He is willing to help me but he is a couple hundred miles away and it has been some time since he built it. (These moves really screw with your life!) Anyway he told me to keep playing with the governor. A combination of tighter springs and lighter weights will make the transmission shift later. I'm going to grind a little at a time off of the weights and see what the effect is on shift points. Sometimes you got to ask yourself "what can I really screw up?"
cable adjustment and geometry play a big part in how it acts also. I'm using Lokar cable on mine plus the piece for getting the geometry right using a Holley carb. Played with it quite a bit at the begining. Drive a 100 yards or so get out and adjust it a little got it where I was satisfied and left i alonet

GOT IT! After lots of internet surfing and talking to my original builder I decided to modify my governor. I removed about 1/2 of the mass from the weights on the governor. Kind of made my own version of a Corvette governor. It's going to need a little more tweaking but I'm definitely on the right track. Just got back fron a test drive and this thing really came to life. Shift points are really acceptable, no more early shifts and I love that 4-2 downshift, it just comes to life! Yes the 700r4 has it's own personality, I'm no transmission builder but this one looks like it's going to live.
Check out Bow Tie overdrives.....They have the correct bracket for the TV cable..It works perfect in my od tranny..The adjustment is so critical...The TV cable is not like a kick down cable...the TV cable controls everything...
One other thing...using a stock cable push it all the way in..and have someone push the pedal to the floor while holding the button in..this should be a good starting point...pushing cable in makes the shifts sooner and pulling the cable out makes the shifts later..a notch at a time
What kind of carb do you have? Both Holley and Edelbrock have brackets for the 700R4 kickdown, and I remember them being around $30 or less.
I'm in the process of gathering parts to do this swap over the winter. There's a big difference between the expensive Bowtie Overdrives TV Cable Kit and the $35 one in the Summit catalog. The BTO kit includes a carb-specific bracket that bolts to the throttle linkage. I'm not going to try to sell thier kit too hard. Check out the installation instructions on thier website if your interested. Ed
