The only way to set the cable on a new carb set up is with the pan removed. Only then can you see what it's actually going in the valve body. Other than the end stop there is no "feel" in the cable so it's impossible to know when it's in the idle position, and thats the critical part.
The quick and dirty way to do it is that with the appropriate bracketry on the carb, you hang the throttle wide open and hold it there. Then yank the TV cable until it won't go any further, and lock it to WOT on the carb. That should be a good rough adjustment. You're essentially setting the TV cable by WOT, not by idle. I, too, baked the 3-4 clutches in a brand new 700R4 in about 5 minutes with this adjusted wrong. Small mistake cost me a couple grand.
