It was my turn to score a deal today. I was looking at rebuilding my 8" Maverick rear end I have in my 26 RPU project. Was checking with the various gear shops for quotes. Walked into one which is close to home and was talking to the counter guy. He tells me, about a year ago, a guy drags this 8" ford rear end in on a little trailer behind his bicycle of all things. The story goes like this. He asks them to completely go through it, and rebuild it with new gears, bearings and all, the whole meal deal. So they go ahead and when done the bill is real close to $1000. The guy never returns for it and they can't call him. The phone number he gave is for someone he knows who won't take his calls. The address he gave is a vacant field So, since I need a rebuilt 8" he sold it to me today for $350 just to get it off the shelf and recover some parts money All ready to use, 3.00 gears and all. Loaded it on my truck and smiled all the way home.
The weird thing is that 8 inch rears go for more than a similar 9 incher. Not sure if it is because of supply or what. Good score, I wish I could find a rebuilt 8 for my project that cheap. Don
Pays to be really lucky sometimes ! You were in the right place at the right time with good ole cash in hand ! That usually works just about all the time ! Retro Jim
The Maverick has the narrowest of 8" rear ends. Hopefully it fits your car. If it came from a 302 v8 it should have the 5 lug axles. Good luck.
The rear is not a limited slip and my old one was not either. The shop I got it from is a reputable gear shop, they specialize in gear and driveline work. It has been totally rebuilt and as such properly set up with all new parts was a real bargain. I have the original work order with the guys name and all and can see the labor and parts. The bicycle story is true. The rear end I am using on my T is a Maverick, the one I got is not. I have to measure but I think its wider. So all I will be using will be the center section. Even so a smokin deal. Why is it that some guys want to rain on your parade no matter what
Why is it that some guys want to rain on your parade no matter what [/QUOTE] I know, pretty discouraging isn't it? Then they wonder why people don't post on forums. I see posts from certain members who NEVER have one positive thing to say.........must be a lonely life. Of course it is a stock rear, but you still got a smokin' deal. I would grab that one in a second. You will find that 3.00 ratio is nice, that is what I had in my 23 and it was a pleasure to drive. Don

Now thats a ****in good deal I paid 200 to just have my rear gear set changed out in my 8", and i brought the gears. i went from a 3.00 to a 3.55 .. that is a score, well played
And that is such a shame too because there are so many great people on here otherwise. We've had the pleasure of meeting lots of HAMB members in person and it is like you have known them all your life. I've seen where people have piled on some "Newby" (whatever the hell that is) and the pack mentality takes over. I think some people are just prone to saying something via keyboard that they would never dream of saying to a guys face. Don
Wow nice score I just spent over $1000 getting the maverick rear end I am using in my truck straightened and rebuilt.
Two of my brothers and I are into HAMB friendly cars. Our rule is that if one brother asks for an honest opinion before he buys a particular car, that's what he gets. If he calls up the other brothers to come over and look at what he bought, the rule is that only the positives are mentioned. Any negatives will make themselves known all on their own. As a newbie here myself, I do cringe a bit when I see people get ripped or put down for no good reason.

Went out to the garage and took some initial measurements. It appears that I have another Maverick rear end. If this proves to be true (once I take more accurate measurements) then my bargain will be even better. I will be able to finish the welding of the brackets and shock mounts to my existing housing, then remove all the internal mill scale from the welding and blast it. After that a really good cleaning and I can transfer all the parts axles included to my housing. (axle end bearings are also new as they were done too in the rebuild). All rebuilt and ready to go for $350 Gotta love it.
Not wanting to be a downer but be careful when you weld the brackets on. Those housings warp like crazy when you weld on them. I tried everything to keep mine straight when I welded brackets on and it was way out of line when I was finished.
Thats why I designed my main brackets to go right around the axle tubes. That will equalize the stress from welding. Then I can weld the lower shock mounts and all should be well.
LOL. I have welded other rearends with no problem but for some reason this one just went wacky. I hope you have better luck that I did.
I guess I did OK when I scored an entire Granada for $75.00. The 8" was perfect for the Model A coupe with fenders that it went in. I just lucked into it while talking to a buddy who buys cars at the impound auction and had to make room in his yard before he went to Iraq a few years back. I'm usually not a "lucky" person but that one came to me kinda like yours did. The hot rod Gods work in mysterious ways sometimes. Congrads on your score now, do we have burn-out videos?
what is the width of a mav rear compared to a 65 falcon? I just bought a 3.00 ge****t for $100 but p***ed on the complete rear for $150 because I didn't think the housing would be any better than what I had and I didn't really want to store more extra parts that I may not ever use and the housing in the car had new axle bearings and brakes, but I'm just curious if the mav rear really is narrower than a falcon, by how much, maybe it would allow a falcon owner to run a little wider tire without rubbing which is an issue with these cars. maybe this info would help someone else on making the same mistake. is it worth it to swap a 5 lug falcon rear for a mav rear?
