i got my motor from a 87 camaro it had tbi, so i replace the manifold to bolt a carb, put a HEI distributor new fuel pump, my question is do i have to do anything else? can the heads be swapped for pre 85 style (non center bolt)
yes. Make sure you have the right intake manifold. The intake bolt holes are at different angles older vs. newer. Also make sure you have the right flywheel/flexplate. One piece is different than 2 piece, I believe. Hopefully the block is drilled to put a mechanical fuel pump pushrod in the block.
Heads up is the same bolt pattern, block and down is not very interchangeable. It is unlikely that you have the fuel pump lobe on the cam, let alone the push rod hole. I am running a in tank pump, fired off a relay, turned on by a oil pressure switch, on a 90 350 in an s10.
If it was an EFI from the factory, it probably had an electric fuel pump, and the factory cam may not have a lobe to drive a mechanical fuel pump pushrod. Some aftermarket cams have that, but I don't think the factory cams for EFI applications did.
One piece rear main seal uses a different flywheel than a two piece. 87 should have the lobe and all for the pump. Later years that has gone away.
For performance bolt on a set of vortec heads out of a chevy truck, they are the highest flowing prodution heads out there.
You do have to swap intakes to an 8 bolt style manifold, you could buy these a any auto swapmeet. they are made by profesional products, cost around $130.00. if you dont have to smog the vehicle then it will be okay to raise comp. and if you do a cam swap you will get more Hp's
