I had a 3x2 setup before my motor was rebuilt but gave up on it because a few people said it was pretty involved to make work with the stock distributor. Right now the motor is fresh with a 3/4 Isky, sanderson headers, and factory 2 barrel. Is a 2 deuce pretty much a bolt on application? What should I look to spend on intake, carbs, and linkage? Can I save some money and use holley 94's instead of strombergs? Thanks Chris
The 2x2 setup is pretty much a bolt on, except for: a new linkage that can be bought from speedway for like 10 bucks, and your still gonna have problems tuning a factory piece of shit(I hate them things) vacuum advance. My suggestion is to convert a chevy mecanical adv. to the flatty. Theres a great Tech on here for it. As far as intakes go you can find them for about for anywhere from 75bucks and up depending on what you have your heart set on. But what I like are the super dual intakes you can find them on ebay all the time for about 150 bucks. they are the ones with the carbs right over the top of the intake runners, the downside is you have to run an offset generator bracket. the regular ones work just fine also though and can be had for about the same price. As far as the 94/97 debate the 97's are much more expensive but better looikng and easier to tune. The 94's downfall are those GD powervalves, but dialed right they perform great and can be had and rebuilt for about 1/3 of the price of strombergs. Hope this helps ya out a bit, and good luck. Drew
Duals are said to be usually just enough carburetion for any flatty and most of the trip setups you see are actually only running one carb with the other two blocked. Moneywise. That of couse depends what you want to install. Edelbrock super intakes are said to be the most effective because their design evenly distributes the mixture to all cylinders. These go for used around 200.00 Then you could go with a highrise thickstun, sold here by Vaphead for 550.00. Hollley Carbs...rebuilt go for 100.00 to 150 a piece. Rebuild your own of course for much cheaper. Most Strombergs don't have the vacuum venturi provisions for allowing a stock dizzy setup and some holley 94s do. I just installed this setup onto my 8BA with a stock dizzy. Many have said that by splitting the venturi vacuum signal between two carbs ..the dizzy advance would not work properly. I tried this anyway for shits and giggles and found my setup to work perfectly...yes and I mean perfectly. The trick is to make damn sure both carb are setup exactly the same. And rebuild your stock dizzy. yes, and I mean the advance too. here's my dual carb setup with the holly dual venturi and stock dizzy.
94's are still cheap and easy to find--get two that are the same model by the info on the side of the bowl, and get ones with LONG shafts on the left IF you want left side linkage, not really necessary with duals. All early and some late truck carbs have this. I buy ONLY core carbs that have tight throttle shaft fit--loose ones are too much trouble and expense as long as you have a choice. Buy a matching spare or two now, as well--I betcha these things start getting scarce and expensive soon, like Strombergs did. Rebuild is easy if you start with reasonable cores, and the only special parts needed usually are the power valves, which won't bankrupt you even if you need to buy several pairs for experimentation.
Your on the right track. I'd ditch the stock distributor in an 8ba. They leave a lot to be desired. I've had good luck with the old mallory dual points, but anything is an improvement. Right now I'm tuning dual holley's on my freshened 59ab with a 3/4 cam, heads, and headers. Your gonna have to fool around with power valves and jets, but when it's right they'll stay right. I'm pretty close now. I think another power valve change might be in order soon though.
