If this issue has been dealt with previously please direct me to the thread. My search proved unsatisfactory. I used to rebuild ramblers, javelins and AMXs but sold them all. Now getting into traditional hot rods and its all new to me, so forgive me if this is a stupid question. In my collection of parts for my AV8 I have accumulated two Cast bell housings and One Stamped bell housing that came with the Flatheads I have bought locally. I am rebuilding a 78-7006 Tranny (1939) and plan to use the 9 inch clutch. I am keeping the torque tube. Does it matter which bell housing I use? Is there a difference that I didn't notice? My preference is the Stamped housing. Your input is appreciated.
take your pick, doesnt matter. there is a stamped one for 6 cyl's thats about an inch deeper, so if both of yours are the same, then they are both v8's. make sure to use the correct starter plate.
I like the stamped ones. To me they look less "agricultural". Plus if you have to weld a bracket or something to them, you can.
Thanks for your replies. They all were on the V8s when I bought them with the starter plates. They appear to be the same bolt patterns. Since it makes no difference I think I'll use the stamped one and save the others for future projects.
The stamped units were used on Mercury from 49 until mid 51 and allow a maximum of a 10 inch clutch. Mercury used a Borg and Beck but the Ford long style clutch works fine. The cast unit was for trucks and will allow an 11 inch clutch along with the smaller ones. Make sure you have the corresponding starter plate for each bellhousing. They DO NOT interchange with Ford passenger car.
