Hello all. new to the site ( I hope this is posted in the correct place) I have a 1950 Ford Custom 8BA that I recently purchased about 4 months ago. Its is complete and stock. I was greasing some fittings and noticed the motor mounts are beyond shot. I've seen some similar posts (not 8BA specific) about changing these without pulling the motor and just jacking the motor a bit. Is there anything else to consider (trans mounts, radiator hoses, wiring, fuel line etc.) that need to be taken off or loosened? Pic attached is the p***enger side mount.

    Thank you for the help!

The mount is part of the pump?

They bolt in. Raise the engine enough and replace them. Yes, check trans mount as well.

Raise only enough to remove and replace. You can keep an eye on the hoses, but you shouldn’t really move it enough to harm them. Do them one at a time.

I did a pair at the same time because I swapped the water pumps out and it was fun getting the stupid things to align back up to put them in. This is really good information!!

Awesome, thank you for the quick responses and advice! Parts were ordered yesterday, I'll send an update when I get them installed. Few pics of the rig attached. IMG_7347.JPG IMG_8188.JPG IMG_8189.JPG IMG_8190.JPG

I enlarged the pics. always select "full image" when posting pics. I see a lot of chlothes pins on the fuel line... vapor lock? does that work?

You might like the adventures of guthriesmith. Look for his “bought a 51 Ford on purpose” thread, it’s great. Use the little search flag at the top of the page and search posts by guthriesmith. Sorry, I don’t know how to post a link.

Thanks for the tip. For the clothes pins, that's what the seller said, although I doubt I will encounter that problem in coastal SoCal, the carb also has a spacer on it, but figured I would leave them on as a conversation piece; guess it worked!

Thank you I am learning and enjoying it. It is different than the 78 Ford F 250 I had for a while. It has the 3spd with OD. The previous owner opted for a dash switch in lieu of the floor mounted 'p***ing' switch. It runs and drives great!

Yes I've been to C&G for tune up stuff, carb kit, cables, plugs, fuel filter etc Great people and parts.

Be careful with it as you can easily do serious damage to the overdrive unit by doing the wrong thing at the wrong time or the wrong way. That looks like a very nice car, so if I were you, I'd find out what's actually going on with the overdrive and bring it back to factory specs. As far as I know, all the parts you may need are readily available, if a little spendy for a couple. Getting the overdrive to work the way it was designed to will make the car an even bigger pleasure to drive.

  20. I've been reading "the adventures of guthriesmith" with interest. Health problems, a very long winter and a host of other roadblocks have prevented me from finishing a couple of jobs on my own '50. I've read jealously about the on road adventures of guthriesmith. However, I now have a very doable goal of 3 or 4 days from now of it becoming my daily driver until early November. I'm happy as a clam over this. :) Those mounts are pretty easy to change (one at a time) and you'll be back on the road.

What's wrong with original wheels?? My '51 coupe has original wheels. I had them powder coated.

Seller said the holes for the lugs may be wallered out a bit. It has some washers, and when I took the wheels off they seemed to be ok, I guess I could take a caliper gauge to them

UPDATE: Got the mounts swapped this afternoon. I jacked the motor from under the pan with a board between the pan and jack. I did them one at a time like others mentioned and it was pretty straightforward. The only note for others is you may have to lengthen the provided holes for the bolts that attach to the water pump, mine were just a hair off, and required them to be drilled/filed longer (inwards). But they 'looked' the same as the old ones, so I had to take them back out when I couldn't get both bolts in. Also, doing them one at a time, when jacking the motor it lifted the car up since one side was still attached (just something to keep in mind for others). As someone else mentioned, setting the frame on jack stands first helped with ground clearance climbing underneath. The replacements had metal across the top of the rubber the old ones did not (not sure which is correct). Quick road test and all seems to work as it should.

Many thanks to everyone for the help!

Earlier motor mounts had the rubber encasing the entire metal sub structure so you never saw them. I have several sets of NOS ones here both Ford and NAPA brands that are like that. I did what you did and bought new ones because the NOS rubber was as hard as a brick and as much as I love swapping out motor mounts I elected to leave them be
