Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HotRodGuy1932, May 18, 2008.

  1. Hi Guys,

I have a 8BA, Made In Canada Marked Head on one side and EAC on the other head which makes it a Mercury engine.

My qestion is. That would make it a 255ci ? With 125bhp ?

And on the Right side of the motor on top near the rear of the motor, is stamped &ARE3455& what does this mean?

What year is this " 53 " maybe?

Totally confussed your help would be great

Try running the block numbers on Fordbarn. The V-8 boys can tell you. If it's like a flatmotor I had, they put Merc. heads on a Ford block. No Merc. crank...

Since they don't match you probably can't learn anything definite from the heads other than they didn't come from the factory that way. So it would be anybodies guess as to what other things have been changed over the years. Pull the head and measure how far the piston moves. 3.75" and it's a Ford, 4" and it's a Merc.

You can't even tell by what it came out of. I've found a couple of Merc flatheads in old Ford trucks...probably junk yard replacements many many years ago.

Yeh you need to pull one of the heads and measure the stroke. Right and left head gaskets are different on the later Ford/Merc 49->53 so make sure you get the right gasket to put it back on together.

  5. Thanks every one i will check, I hope it is a Merc motor that would be really cool

The Flathead Ford V8 Site says...
    (j) On 1950 thru 1953 models (and beyond) any additional letters between the basic model letters and serial numbers denote the ***embly plant.

An A3 block would be a '53 casting.
