replacing the seats on my 8ba. all the intakes came out pretty easy using my mig. how ever, the exhausts are a different story. using the mig and went around the seat. no dice. trimmed a valve down and welded it to the seat, nothing. tried flux core and same results. never had this much problem. am i missing something?
Does it have valve seats? Some late flatheads didn’t, and maybe someone added the intakes on your block later.
Hmmmm.... I've never run across an 8BA that didn't have valve seats. Anyway, most engines of any kind have a notch under the seats, so they can be punched out from underneath. I don't understand what you are doing. The replacement seats that are available are over size and the block has to be fly cut to use them. Exacting work and must be done by a competent machine shop. If you can find NOS seats, they need to be staked in to avoid the danger of coming loose. Use stainless exhaust valves.
ok, must clarify my info, the exhaust seats came out pretty easy, its the intakes that wont budge. i think it a late block with no intake seats. anyway, I'm done for awhile, as the local machine shop is 2 months behind.
Sometime starting in late '50/'51 , Ford did only put seats in the exhaust since leaded gas was the norm. I believe '53 block don't have seats in either intake or exhaust.
