    Hi all,
This is probably an easy question for you but I don't have your experience so would appreciate your help (and maybe save me from making an expensive mistake).

The car is a '32B deuce, running a 383 Chevy stroker. Mainly street driven but will see a bit of 1/4 mile action.

I'm looking to get a crate axle but am not too sure what type of 3rd member I should go for.

I think 31 spline, big bearing but not sure if should go for open, traction lock, TruTrac or Detroit.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

28-splines is fine for the occasional blast down the 1/4 mile - it makes the rest of the components cheaper too.

For a street car, I'd tend more toward the clutch-style Trak-Lok than the ratchet-style detroit.

Having said all of that, if your future plans include a bigger engine or more strip time, I'd go with the 31-spline axles & the Detroit...

Most rodders want a 56 to 58 inch wide rear end ... measured this way ...

I have a 58 inch under my 32 Roadster and I went with a 56 inch under my 32 3W ... :) I like the Detroit Locker ... but it is a little noisy .... I have a Traction LOK in the Roadster ... and a Detroit unde the 3W ... Both are good units. The Detroit was a little annoying in the Roadster ... cause you hear everything ... so I pulled it ... and put in a Traction-LOK . The 3W ... being closed up and all with windows ... the Detroit should be OK ... but I have not driven it yet

  5. If you are buying a complete axle assembly new, might as well go for he strong stuff. 31 spline axles or better, and a clutch style limited slip for street driving.

If you are going to really beat on it, and are planning a killer motor in the future (lots of spray or a blower), a detroit soft-locker, and 35 spline axles are probally only a few dollars more. The soft locker is as good as the original detroit but is much more livable on the street.

Thanks to all for the advice and pics. I'll print off the thread and links and I can now give it some better informed thought.

And wow, doesn't this forum move fast!! .......
