<hr style="color: rgb(209, 209, 225); background-color: rgb(209, 209, 225);" size="1"> Ok I have a 1959 F-100 292 3 speed with the stock 9" rear and 3.75 gears. I also have in my possession another 9" carrier with a 3.00 geared 28 spline Equa lock that I bought a few years back from a friend of a friend. Did not know it was a Equa lock till tonight after reading up on 9" axles at Kevinstang's Ford Nine Inch Differential Page + . Now am I correct in thinking that if my truck has 28 spline axles I can swap this carrier into my housing and run it? Is there anything I need to check before running this thing?

I live in San Diego and I don't drive my truck as much as I'd like do to fuel costs and the fact that I drive on the freeways mostly and that is tough on the truck with that 3.75 gearing. The 292 is stock rebuilt 2 years ago with a holley 4 barrel. Is this a bad idea? I have driven lots of old cars in my time (my dad is a early mustang nut) but to my knowledge I have never driven anything with a Equa lock or the later Traction lock.

I have hauled a few heavy loads in the past but it's not something I do often. Some old palm tree pieces every now and then (I carve tikis) and my motorcycle are all I want it to carry. It's not a hot rod and I don't race so I am aware I'll be giving up some low end power. With the current gearing and the 3 speed I can just about leave it in 2nd and drive through town stop and go traffic. I guess I'll just clean it up and swap it in and see how I like it. If not is there a market for these equa lock things? What's a good price to sell it for if I decide I don't want it?

Dude, I swap out 3rd members all the time. I have collected up a bunch of ready to run pumpkins from junk yards. just as long as they are 28 spline you are good to go. I have 2.75 in my truck that I pulled out of a lincolin, changed the yoke to the style from the truck and was on my way. The 3.00 is probably to high for your stick trans, but give it a try. Automatics are more forgiving with high ratios.

  4. Equa-lok is kinda obsolete, don't know of any replacement clutches. Uses a bellville spring to load the clutches.
Two things to be aware of in swapping pumpkins, one is usually when you put an early pumpkin in a later housing, is there a fill bung?
Two, most are 1310 series U-joints, some are 1330. Two different lengths of pinion yokes. You can swap the yokes out.

yep, need to verify 31/28 splines. 3:00 sounds high for a stick. if you have 3:73 now you can likely sell them for a good price, or trade. guys running overdrive automatics like that gear ratio. search online for: project33.com and click on calculators to help you figure out what might be a good gear ratio for you.

IF your truck has the original stock axles ... it is a 28 spline. Ford did not come out with the 31 splines until the High Horse Power 406 or 427 Galaxies started busting the 28's ( 1963 or 1964 ). Then ... you still had to have a high horsepower vehicle to get the 31 splines. It was not until the 70's that the 31 spline axles became more common.

    I would try the 3.00 :D

IF it is too high ... it is not a big deal to find a 3.25 and then change it out.

Your 59 F100 should be a 31 spline[been there before].To eliminate the fill hole issue, drill and tap for a pipe plug on top of your housing and while you are at it do the same on the bottom.ROY.

It's the stock axle so I'm pretty sure it's a 28, but I wont know till I pull a axle and check, which I need to replace the axle seal anyway so seems like a good time to do the swap.

Never said my truck was a 28, I said if. The equa lock diff I have is a 28.

Artfrombama: both the carriers have the fill plug on them, no fill in housing. and I believe I checked a while back and the yokes are the same.

Most trucks had 31 spline and cars 28 spine .
As long as the spline count is the same as the 9" 3rd member you are going to use , they will fit just fine .
If you want better gas mileage get a gear ration in the 2.79 to 3.00 range . With the gears you are running now the RPM's are much higher all the time thus using more fuel . You might even want to consider putting the 2 bbl back on for a while also unless you are the only one that won't open up that 4 bbl !
Also , headers will help , free flowing mufflers , air cleaner with a cold air box will also help with gas mileage increase . Also be easy on the gas peddle . You can also get an adapter and install a trans with an O/D . All these things will help to increase gas mileage .

Doubt seriously your truck has 31 splines, they didn't show up until 66 or so.
Be sure and dump a bottle of smelly additive in there for the clutches.

A T5 from an S10 will work well with those three-oh's!

I was just about to ask about an oil additive.

I like my 3 - on the tree thank you, and plan to keep it.

I guess the main motivation here is getting the RPMs down a bit while at freeway speeds.

I'll be sure to update this after I get it swapped out, I have a bad front wheel bearing so I'm waiting till I get the parts for that to do all this.

31's in trucks were hit and miss until 73. After 73, I never saw a 28 in a 4X4, or Half ton truck, but one never knows with FORD's. Early Bronco's ALWAYS had 28's. 66-77

I have a Equa lock in my 54 F100 that I went through, Obsolete maybe but rebuild kits can be had.

hellbilly1932 best bet is pull an axle and check the splines most likely it's 28 spline if it's original.

Place called Jeffs Bronco Graveyard carries about all the 9in parts you could need including Equalock parts. They have a website www.Jeffsbroncograveyard.com so shop away.

Most early Ford 1/2 ton 9 inch rears up to 1972 are 28 spline axles. there are some 31 spline but not many most of them would be found under camper specials . Most 1/2 ton rears after 1973 are 31 spline axles.
