Has any one found an axle bearing to install a small bearing axle into a large axle bearing housing. The large bearings are 1.533 ID and 3.150 OD . The small bearings are 1.379 ID and 2.834 OD . What I am looking for is a bearing that has a 1.379 ID and a 3.150 OD so I can put a small bearing axle into a large bearing housing. Thanks for any help,Jim.
They do make one ... I do not have the number but Enjenjo posted it awhile back. I wrote it down but have misplaced it
"Kevinstang.com" says that BCA 511004 is supposed to be the one to use...BUT he hasn't actually tried it himself so your on your own! The inner and outer diameters are supposedly correct.
I've made a simple adapter bushing on a lathe to do just what you are describing. I retained the small bearing and simply made a bushing to fit the bearing in the housing, but it was for a stock car, and a one time thing because you are opening up a can of worms as far as the seal and brake backspace issues.
Can someone verify the BCA 511004 part number or provide additional information? This part number would be very useful. Don't want to reinvent the wheel if we don't have to. Thanks, RGV
With the small bearing axle generally having a 2 1/2" brake backspace( though sometimes 2" and 2 1/4"), and the large bearing backing plate having a 2 3/8" brake backspace finding drums will be a chore, or there will be some machining involved.
Currie and Strange both have them. They can also tell you for certain where you stand on the brake back space question.
I contacted Currie they said they did not have one to go the way I wanted. They did have one to go the other way from a big bearing axle to a small bearing housing end , but said it was for race use only.
What about the 57-59 Ford nine inchers that came in the Ranchero,s and Ranch wagons? From what I understand they were 28 spline axles with a big bearing housing.
So has anyone tried the BCA 511004 bearing to see if it works ? I have a axle that is the right length and could make this work if the bearing would fit. It seems to me by measureing ,that my backspacing on the two axles I have is the same. Any more input on this swap would be appreciated. Thanks,Jim.
I got a bearing today it was cross referanced from the BCA 511004 # to a SKF 232-R . It has the same ID and OD I need . I just need to figure out the seal deal. I am getting closer. Updates to come, Jim.
This thread is pretty old, but I just ran into the same issue with a rear I narrowed without paying attention to the ends (doh). Did the bearing actually work out?
i have a question on brake spacing.is the back spacing determined by where the bearing is located on the axle or by the back spacing of the backing plate or both.erik you can cut the bearing mount off and weld the one on the end you need.hot rod works sells just the ends or get a donor housing and cut them off and weld them on.
I figured out the right sealed bearing and axle seal to use. Works like a charm. I will post part #'s tomorrow. It was a different bearing than the part # listed above, although I had one of those here too and it might have worked.
sorry it was kinda like "Tomorrow" but since I get sooo much shit for having too "New" of a car here, I don't spend that much time on the board.
