I have a 28 spline 9" and I can not get the pinion seal to stop leaking replaced one yesterday and the new on leaks I could not tighten my pinion nut to the recomended 225 # is this the problem ? it is a shimmed pinion not a crush sleeve

  2. No, it''s not the nut tightness causing the leak. Did you check the pinion for wear where it hits the seal?

Check vent on axle housing - Speedy Sleeve on the yoke.

It will have a crush sleeve unless someone changed it over to shims for the preload

I agree its the pinon wear probly .They will leak just like a worn slip yoke in the rear seal of a standard trans even with a new seal .If it excessively worn its to small to make a good fit with the seal...

where did you get the seal and what kind and brand.. the cheap shit can leak.. ask for a quality seal and a double lip style . also 10-4 on the vent.. make sure its free of any obstruction. Dont matter id its shimmes or has a chrush sleeve as long as the pre load is correct and the pinion isnt moving..

The best seal is the Benda pinion seal (neoprene), named after the Ford engineer that designed it. Summit sells it also or any Ford dealer can get it for you thru Ford motorsport.

I agree with the others , check for a wear groove where the seal rides.

If you did not pack the back side of the seal with grease, the spring can pop out making it leak also.

The whole center section is new from Randy's Ring and Pinion three months ago the yoke is older but does not seem to be out of round or have any burs I thought maybe it was the spring the first time but no and this time I did not pack with grease but if I have replace it again I will what do you think get a brenda seal and try again this thing is driven me nuts

  10. If you aren't 100% sure its leaking out of the seal, another thing to watch is that it can leak between the pinion splines and yoke and then out between the pinion threads and pinion nut, or between the nut, washer and yoke. I had the same problem and it was an easy fix. Just out a dab of silicone on the pinion threads, nut and washer before you put the nut on to make sure this isn't a possibility. This actually happened to me once.

Make sure you put a little RTV on the nut before you install in. Can leak around the splines. Make sure your drive shaft is running true. Bent shafts or bad U joints will knock out the seal.
