I was wondering if there is a particular year and model that would be the correct width for my 48 Chevy Stylemaster.
    thanks, phil

  2. 56" - 57" works well in everything from Model A to Fat Fendered Fords.

More than likely that size would work for your Chevy.

Measurements quoted are from outer brake drum to outer brake drum.
In other words, where the wheel seats.

Pay attention to your wheel backspacing as well.

I used a 77 bronco under my 39 chev coupe. the width was just right. I think they are the same from 66 to 77(the old "square" Bronco)

You want about 60" to 61" drum to drum 70s Tbird, and Torino, 61 to 64 full size Ford both work.

For a rule of thumb add 6 inches to the flange to flange measurement to get the drum to drum. So the prior message of 60" will be a 50-59 ford or 59-60 edsel-tbird, or the early Bronco. Narrow 8" are good rear axles & the 64-66 Mustang, Falcon & Comet are good sources. Same 28 spline axles just a smaller carrier & in some cases smaller outer axle bearing.

I'd say first to measure the drum-drum of your car then search for that measurement.

Prior threads referred to other sites such as Kevinstang..... otherwise PM me for info i've collected.

 OK guys, whats this drum to drum, & flange to flange+ adding 6"s?? Myself & others say flange to flange we mean wheel mount to wheel mount, backing plate to backing plate would be less, not more.

Type the words "9 inch rears" into your computer search box and read, read, read. Lots of cool info.

Thanks for the help guys, i wanna stick with the nine cuz i think an 8" would be a lil weak under the caddies torque. Any suggestions for ratios, i think i should keep it low. Maybe 350?
