I'll make a gate like the one in Plan II, slightly different. Anyways, got it all wired up and running, and went for a little drive. One of the sensors is wrong, making it run rich, so I'll try to fix that tomorrow. But it does run, transmission works, brakes work, posi traction works, etc. It's a blast to drive! and gives my kid something like a video game to play on the laptop... have a little oil leak at the adapter where the oil cooler went, the plug I removed and reinstalled needs a new seal, and also the transmission cooler lines are leaking, I don't think I got them tight enough..and exhaust pipes are kind of in the way now. I'll try again in the morning when it's cool. My wife and I took the Corvette to the car club meeting earlier tonight. It's also still fun to drive.
My racing partner had what he called a "can of cures". He had a few of them. Things removed from junk cars, shifters. Automatic and stick. Clutch linkage, brake and clutch pedals, linkages, etc. We outfitted a few stock cars with shifters from that jumble of junk.
I used to have a bunch more stuff...years ago one of my friends, whose cars we worked on a quite a bit, called my sheds the "magic kingdom", because it always seemed I could look in there and find the part we needed! but most of it's gone now, due to cleaning up, and then moving.
Congrats @squirrel ! You built another that has the same use but is a whole different animal. Can't wait to see that now famous grin thru the windshield!
@gene-koning , my self had one of those Winters a few year after on market , It lasted only week or so after loosing a race because I forgot to slap over for gear change , Over years there been so many shifter made in 80s up by Hurst ,B&M with ratcheting ,springs Ext that are just Gimmicks, Lot of play, Loose & long gates. Same with Stick , I have a hand full of Hurst 1/4 sticks Front & rear exit on cable , whats Nice about 1/4 stick , there is a tab part that can be removed for Glide on 3 speed use, B&M Pro Bandit nice for tight fit , contact air / electric shift & nice for Dragster &well built , I also have a Precision shifter , over 25 years old , Well built may be 3/4 wide or less ,it can be set up for may trains Option 2-4 speeds , handle can be flip forward / Reverse , same with cable , air /electric. One a complaint about is P-R , I need to change gates to my liking , Another on from Australia early 2000s Lowee or something like that , simple well built , I try to set shifter up so No reaching ,less effort in arm movement, Same with chute Lever /deployment, I see so many Racers Reaching & Searching For when Needed ,same for Fire Suppressions, @squirrel this could of been installed ? & when coming to Tunning @ initial start up & so on , are you doing your self or another ?
I gotta admit, I've never seen one of those shifters before, don't even recall seeing them advertised in magazines, not a good design though for those with carpal tunnel syndrome.
that's a wild shifter! I'm about 3/4 done with my shifter, so I'll just finish it and not try to use something else. So far my and my kid are doing the tuning, learning the basics right now. How to sync files, set up the sensors, how the IAC works, we're looking at timing now, we got the data logging going so we can see what the numbers look like under different conditions, etc. Lots to learn! but having a lot of experience with engines and a little with fuel injection, we're starting to understand it. What's the first destination when you get something on the road?
@DDDenny , now curious I will have to look at the box to see if there's a date on it, off my head thinking 85ish ? @squirrel , I was just giving my Opinion on shifters, my self I have made a few & modified,, Just letting others know try to stay with simple workings ,& Quality. Photo shop @ O'Reillys Hmmmm! That was fast , only few weeks & a driver , How does Turbos feel coming in over Instant torque of roots, I know your not to much into testing off track , One of the Draggy are good logging for testing out side of track & @ Track , reasonable priced .
heh...I haven't had a chance to get on it yet, so I don't know how boost works yet! I'll look into the Dragy...but there's probably an app for the phone that will do most of the same thing No go fast video, here's one putting out of the driveway.
Son & I did a turbo on injected 454 years ago. Big/huge injectors on the shelf ready to mount. He did a test drive to see how it felt. Had to try a little boost. 2 blown head gaskets 2 pistons & cracked cylinder was the result. The computer showed 19-1 air fuel flashed up couple of times as it blew. Watch your tune, reduce timing as boost goes up
Good its on the road !!! (I think....it needs some sort-uva hood...but that just me. with bulges and bubbles!!) 6sally6
The exhaust is still a work in progress, I'm trying to make an "automatic cutout" that will route exhaust out the tailpipe until it's making more than cruising power...then let it out the stack. First trying free things, then maybe I'll end up with a boost actuated or electric or cable operated one. We can get away with some crazy stuff here.
I run a Precision shifter in my FED. They are a very nicely made product. Could the Aussie shifter be made by Ken Lowe? He is a US drag racer who moved Down Under many years ago, still does a lot of racing parts. Cheers, Harv
We have a couple of local guys with LS turbo Caprices. One is a grandma car.. a real sleeper and the other is a wagon, reportedly worth 1200 HP. Both are as quiet as church mice. One does have electric exhaust cut-outs.
Went to the dump (to get rid of garbage) and weighed Cheep...right at 2900 empty. Not too bad. I think the exhaust is going to work OK like this...and the flap can be quickly removed for racing, if wanted. It stays closed until the throttle opens a ways, then it just opens a bit. Not very loud, but you can hear it. Oh, kid found an air cleaner when we were at the parts store this morning. I think that will work fine and also easily removed for racing. People keep telling me the intercooler is too low. But it's not as low as this guy's!
I finished the shifter, it has a reverse lockout now. The Neutral switch is underneath the floor, acting on the bottom of the shift lever.
You need an old Hurst Auto Shifter the His & Her's like the 68 GTO's had back in the day, I think it was the first V type gate Hurst made possible? If I lived in Arizona I'd let you use my Hurst Auto Stick. Keep up the great work ... Dustin (1Nimrod)
But is the other car on air bags that are left down? Still think the Cow Catcher around that intercooler would fit the purpose of the build. Doesn't have to be heavy, more for the looks.
Yea , optical dillusion on the intercooler height.. Sorry bout that. Hope the Cheep does not land hard after the launch wheelie ?
I also hope it doesn't land hard! Trying to keep the part purchases and fabrication to only what's necessary...but my idea of necessary is of course different from everyone elses! I'm even getting a new windshield tomorrow, since it has a crack all the way across, and things like that make the cops want to stop you if you're driving an obnoxious hot rod. Oh, I'm going through all the receipts, since I think I have just about everything bought. Looks like I probably won't make it under the $9k goal, but won't miss it by much. There's a weird "beyond 1320" event at the drat strip in Tucson this weekend, I might try to go up there and see what happens. Just to get my feet wet, as it were. There's also a Friday night drags at Firebird (about 180 miles away) on the 30th, which I should probably try to go to, since drag strips kind of shut down for the summer here, because it's too damn hot.
oil and filter 25 ATF 50 gear oil 20 harness 88 windshield 268 No coolant listed Fluids and safety. These are costs but usually not applied to the budget for these things, I'd guess, at least that's how grassroots does it. You might even be able to ignore brakes (125) and suspension for the same reason. Just like the roll bar (TBD), shaft loop (30), SFI damper (220) and trans shield (220)? Also, I don't see the cheap electrical fuse panels on post 371. Nice detailed price list, but you knew we would be checking the math, right? As for the hood, You could do the roadkill thing and leave it uncut but strapped to the roof rack! Adjustable spoiler!
