It's funny... here's the picture I saw when I was five (5) that ruined me for life!! Also explains my infactuation with early Hemis as well!

I hear rad stories about that Model A! I think it's safe to say he's been down the traditional road! :D He was super excited when I picked up the exact same 1953 Chrysler Hemi FirePower for my 31 Model A!

I'd go Washington blue (personal fav), put the hood on to hide the shiny stuff, and maybe some cream colored steelies with rings and caps. Keep the bumpers on too.

    If only I had Photoshop...

Washington blue is one of my favorite colors also!! My Model A is going to get the Wash. Blue for sure. My Dad always wanted a red hot rod, (of some shade) so this has to be in the blood catagory when it comes to paint. If any of you have pics of some dark red metallic paint jobs throw them up. Would like to see them. I don't want this to turn into the "what color should I paint my car?" thread though. Would appreciate the input none the less.

Scooter, Good idea about snuggling up the rear bumper. (People will ram the back of you here at the drop of a hat anyway so you'll need a bumper). Personally always liked the Corvette valve covers & Small air filter. Maybe a fresh coat of red primer. Wheels do a lot for setting the character of a car; your choice there. .....Bob

This air cleaner might compliment those valve covers pretty well...

Anyone running something with a little more shape to it. Maybe a Goodson style that would use a standard air filter?

Fully agree! Tough one there! The bucks aren't really in place to make that happen right now. Even just some steelies on the same tires would be fine. I might consider that. The problem is the offset for the rear. We had to order a custom offset for those rear wheels so we could jam those tires up in there. They JUST fit in there!

The best part for about any 35/36 Ford for me can be seen right in this pic when I got my cabriolet. Everything else is secondary.

That's a bitchin car and it can be "saved". ;) I disagree on the wheel change. The wheels will change the feel instantly. If you can talk him into it, I'd do that first, and run the hood. You can always take the hood back off when you get the motor where you want it. You can get shorter bumper brackets from Bob Drake. I've got a set for mine, but I never have put them on.

Personally I have never figured out why people take out the original seats. I love mine. Dad recently put an original seat (and interior) in his 3 window and it was a huge improvement over the shitty buckets he had.

My Juliano's banjo wheel on a tilt column. Stupid money, but in the end, it's perfect.

I've been to that house!!! HAHA, looks dang good scooter. I would say change the wheels right now, and he'll change his mind when you take him to a couple of (good) car shows.

Wow! Thanks man!! That looks pretty rad! Nice photochop...

He'll never go for the flat black... ;) :D I think those wheels would look great on there too... I'm sure he would go for those.

EDIT: HAA! You already changed it! Funny!

Django... thanks for the pictures and words. You're right...

Leave the red primer (there's to much flat black out there including mine) The wheels have to go as well as anything elce that's pretty. Looks like high back buckets? Say bye bye to those too. How about a couple of bucket seats out of a 68 ford econoline van and moving blankets for comfort? I hope to hell you don't have a tilt steering column in it.

Stockton wheel makes whatever wheel you want. I think Vintique gets them there. About $80 each I think.

I think this is close to the red you were talking about.

I just put chrome steel wheels on it, didn't even lower it or put wider tires on it. :)

  23. Looks like the simplest solution would be to sell out to dad or buy dad out.
well there is an even simpler soultion than that. he's your dad, build it with him and let him have fun with it. What's it gonna hurt?

Of course there are other things that you could do like get yourself another set of wheels n tires you already got the hood and fenders. When you want to be cool just switch 'em out what are we talking here half hour or forty minutes, go cruisin'. Done deal.

Scooter, I think the problems you are talking about are minimal. You have a great car there, I'd leave the stance alone, it looks good. The "shiney" stuff your dad is talking about is legit. I can relate because back in the day, we didn't have all the neat stuff that is available now days. I like the shiney stuff too. You have to realize that we would have loved to have that stuff back then but, it wasn't made back then. Let him pick out the shiney stuff, no big deal and put the hood back on it. The 35-36's look much better with the hood anyway. Look, I don't have a dad and would give anything to be able to ask him what he thought about my project. My dad wasn't into building cars but, he knew his stuff and had good taste. Even if I didn't use his suggestions, I'd still give anything just to talk to him again. My point is dad won't be around forever and when he is gone the decisions he made and the parts he put on that car will be priceless to you. It's hard to see this now but, just imagine what it's like to have no dad to even ask the questions to. Don't butt heads with he just let him do his part, it will mean a lot to you after he's gone. Too many people are hung up on traditional vs street vs etc. Don't worry about that crap just enjoy building the car with your pops. Good luck. Life is too short my friend.:) :)

That's about it. If you want to put the hood on to hide the billet then do that, honestly Finned Valve covers are about as played out as the billet stuff was 5 years ago. Maybe some louvers on the hood. Paint it deeeeep gloss black. I like those wheels but they belong on my 68 Slomaro. Feel free to send em my way. Of course you could look into some wheels for when you have it and are driving it for normal use and let your pops spring for new fancy one's when he drives it to Good Guys. The interior should not be purposely made to look old, if it has decent, if maybe a bit fancy for the Hambers around here then who cares. nobody cares what the interior looks like anyway, unless it is a drop top.

Yep, and that's the reason I posted the pic of me and my Dad. He is constantly on me to change the door handles on my car. They are Truck handles. He wants me to put car handles on. But I keep telling him that is what he and my Uncle put on the car 40 years ago and they are damn well staying! Hahaha. Same with the step pads for the rumble seat. They're truck parts too cause you couldn't get replacement pads for a car back then. "Why don't you replace those damned old ugly things and put the car ones on?" I tell him well, they were good enough for him the first time. Hahaha! :D

Thanks everyone for your suggestions! All of them! They're much appreciated and I think they're all good. I think the one I agree the most with is to just simply go with what's there and let nature take it's course with what happens next.

I sent my pops a link to Mark's website with the build of his black '35 and he freaked out! The first thing he said was "I like the three deuces". My response was I'll donate three of my 94's to the cause if you want to run them...

There really is an underlying subject that needs to be identified here. It's not cars, style or the parts involved here or even what looks good and bad... getting along with family and make the best out of every situation!

    Exactly!

Thanks guys! I'll post some updates if we make any changes to the car. In the mean time, it needs to get driven! I'm thankful we even HAVE a coupe to work on together!

    Cheers!

Paint that bitch the original green. You'd have something different.

You can't see the valve covers from the driver's seat, can ya? There's one solution :)

BTW, cool car, and will still be cool with any covers or wheels

Me too and I'll tell you why. In 1965, my dad bought a great running reasonably solid '29 Model A coupe for a father-daughter project. It was to be my high school ride. We took her down to the bare frame, had the body work done in lead, no less, rebuilt the front axle and then the confortation started. I got ahold of a good running but junk '50 Ford. My plan was to drop the '50 flattie/tranny and rear end in it among other rod stuff. My dad wanted to leave her stock, so he and I could hang out with the Model A Club my uncle belonged to. Discussions lead to arguments to bitterness and the A Bone never was finished. My dad later sold her to a neighbor kid who was interested in restoring her behind my back for $600 in '73. I was pissed at him for a long time, but my anger eventually turned to sorrow because the parent-kid bonding time spent working on that car was gone forever. My dad died in '90, but were he still here, I'd be honored to do ANY car project with him he wanted his way. That '35 is ultra cool...we spend too much time bashing well built, tasteful street rods around here anyway. So I'd go along with what your dad wants. Let him make the decisions now. You can redo the coupe your way (hopefully) a long waydown the road if you want.
