I was thinking ring design, cyl wall thickness, heat transfer rate would be impacted. Exp in wet liner thickness, ring design, piston groove Temps. When you "but" rings its game over.

Sounds like the block for a good 265 build.

I had a 265 from a 57 truck back in mid 80s, bet that would have been similar. Gave it away when I moved to Texas.

Besides the Harmonic Damper purchase, I have started getting parts. Long snout aluminum water pump and Harland Sharp roller rockers. I also have a question for everyone. I have also added a pic of the dome pistons in this engine. I have searched for ever since the day I bought it to try and identify who made them. These are circa the late 80's/early 90's. I can find no name or part number on them inside the piston. They are heavy cast, have a look like an old set of Jahn's pistons but I know they aren't older than the 80's/90's. I have had some people say the look like Ohio Cast or Badger pistons but I have still never found a set for a 265. I would just like to find out catalog info. on them, so if anybody can help identify them and maybe has a catalog from back then, it sure would be appreciated.

Anybody have any insight into the piston manufacturer ? I know I am going to use them anyway but I would just like to find some info. on them.
EDIT: SOMEBODY has to have some insight into these pistons ! With all the wealth of hot rodding knowledge on The H.A.M.B. , somebody has to know something. These pistons may have a pert number on the side near the end of the wrist pins but I am not pulling them out at the present time.

Well I don't have much of an engine update but I did grab some other parts because I couldnt pass up the deals. I got a brand new set of Heddman long tube headers with the gasketless collectors and all the hardware for a mere $200. I also picked up today a 57 Olds rearend, drum to drum with a 4.10 open carrier for $300. Rearend is ugly but will clean up nicely. It has 60 third member housing so it is obviously a mix of parts and I did count the spline but I am assuming they are 29 spline axles. I am srtting up a drop off day with a machine shop soon so I can finally get this thing going and ready for Spring.

Coupla thoughts from a Ford guy........
Have you looked into getting a custom camshaft ground ? The price is the same or LESS than a shelf grind. With such a small cu.in. engine 'I THINK' a tighter LSA would be better. (108 LSA will benefit the bottom end ....where you are lacking)
Also...with really huge Lift numbers... it really stresses the springs and such. Jus say'in !
With such a sweet sounding cammed up small block $$$.... an H pipe (or X pipe) will quieten in down a good bit for not much gain in power (less than 10 HP)
IF you like the formula one sound you might like the pipe. (I took mine off)
Is there another factory piston (Ford/Dodge etc.) that 'might' work for less money.

If you need an experienced machine shop, that knows these engines, contact Victory Engines. 216-251-7157. On Lorain Rd &W.150th. The 2 guys Ray and Phil have been doing the deal for decades, check them out.

  7. Don't know what you had planned for the rusted oil pan or distributor. But I have a solid 57 283 pan and a factory distributor for the oiling system of 55 265s in decent shape that was working as of 2018 when the engine was pulled to put in a me too engine (not my car lol)

I love hearing about 265 builds. While I was growing up we ran a 265 in our 280 hydroplane. That engine spun right on up there. History moment: The 1st anything to win a race with a SBC was a 266 Hydroplane called WaWa II with the engine built by Vic Edelbrock. I remember we spun a main bearing at the nationals in 1968 and with our new to the boat driver starting a half a lap down, he finished less than that behind the winner. Enjoy the time with your son building this and have fun.

Since I decided to build the 56 265 I got a hold of it has a good pan. I am planning on making the oiling modification so I don't have the "pulse oiling" system. Since this engine will be run in higher RPM, I want it to oil like traditional sbc.

Also, I forgot, a 55 pans is ynique and you cabt use aby other sbc pan. I is shaped different due to the fact it doesnt have an oil filter but thanks for the offer.

  11. Well if you change your mind on the oiling modifications the distributor isn't going anywhere. Only sort of plan I had for it was to use it if I ever scored a 265

Buddy in HS had a built 265 in his 56 Chevy. That thing ran like a scalded dog.
