EDIT: I feel like I just bored a whole bunch of people to sleep with my absent-minded post, LoL I apologize for any yawns or boredom I caused with this, but just in case my old noggin isn't right about my having decided what I think it is, here goes: A friend I've known since 4th grade bought an old Fleetmaster a month or so back, he found this transmission in the trunk. I came back and edited this post, as what I found after a little MORE digging suggests to me it's just the regular old three speed that went behind a 216 and worked with the torque tube/enclosed driveshaft. Correct me if I'm wrong, I want to give my old friend an accurate answer. It's been a mighty long time since I've worked with one of those old transmissions.
that's what it looks like to me. date code H 14 7? that would make it from August 17, 1947. Could have been original to a 1947 or 48 car.
Yes, that's a 1940-48 passenger car transmission. I don't know what possessed the engineers to go with the "selector" shifting setup, but Chevrolet, Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and a lot of Mopars all did it at the time.
Inside you'll find teeth worn halfway off the low/reverse slide, & some of the cluster chewed off ...
The previous owner may have bought it as a spare. Open it up and look inside. It may be just fine. The gears are interchangeable with a few different years
