Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by JNKYARDDOG_1, Apr 30, 2022.

  1. I just got this baby 331 this morning... It is fairly complete engine minus the P/S and AC brackets. The engine is NOT seized whooo hooo.. But looks like the P/O ran penzoil in it all gunked up.. Was going to see if it ran as is.. But with the amount sludge in it I do not think it is a wize idea..so off to the machine shop to be done.. $$$ UGH !

  2. Now I have read about adapters to put a Chev BB water pump on.. But what does one do about the water going to the heads on this style of W/P?

I also used the BB Chevy water pump on the 331 that's going into the '40 Chrysler (avatar).
and fabricated this to connect the heads and provide the t-stat housing & byp*** connection.

You can also use a water cross over from a 392

  12. I was asked if I was hiding one in my pants once

Have you looked at the "Hemi Tech Index" yet? On the '55 331 the long BBChevy W/P fits over the OEM timing cover &, as was said, the OEM 392 water cross over bolts right on. THE OEM oil cap is how air gets in, replace the puke tube in the back with a PCV valve going to the (newer) carb.

Oil cap: I pulled the steel wool out & replaced it with a cut down lawn mower air filter.

That breather sure is neat. A lot of the '51-54 advertising and emblems featured a prominent V for the cars with Firepower under the hood. That is probably an original, but I've never seen one like that. What year is your 331?

  17. I was told 55.. Once I get it out of the van, going to douche it a bit and run some numbers...

  18. AS far as that fill tube breather.. I thought it was a ford Unit?

Use code on a flat in front of valley cover. '55 has the openings in the front of the head, all other 331s have solid front heads.

    Yeah, that too!

I can often save myself a trip with a single picture. No extra height = no 392. It's easy enough to spot, once you know.

I have stopped bothering trying to convince folks looking for extreme-top-dollar for their 392 that is actually a 354 or a 1955 331.

For now, that is. A nice cam and lifter kit, and rework that factory 4-barrel manifold a bit to take a modern 4-barrel, and you could have a stout performer!

The 55 331 does not have the integrated bell housing. I have one for sale. They are a great engine.

A 55 331 should have triple nickle 555 casting heads on it. They are the best flowing of all of the early hemi heads

  29. Would that be on the dual 4 bbl version?
