a/c in my '55 1st series truck

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by nels1954, Aug 31, 2013.

  1. Just finished installing a fresh air heater in my '55 1st series Chevy truck. Rebuilt the heater and it works great. I am running a rebuilt '62 261. The heater works great but the summer temps in Idaho leave me considering air conditioning in my truck. Looking for some input.

    Vintage Air is for wimps!
Adapt your own from a donor vehicle.

  3. VA and CAA come with the heater in it. Cannot not get them without. Under dash is your friend.

I've had good luck with R134 a, Sanden 209 compressor, and a parallel flow condensor with its own dedicated electric fan to keep it cool when sitting still.

The only one you have to please is yourself. If someone wants to sweat their ass off thats their business. The car in my Avatar has Vintage Air and will freeze you out.

I used Southern Air (Super Frost).... and Alan Grove Brackets.... Very cost effective.

Fact is a Sanden compressor is a Sanden compressor. Why spend the big money on the same one.

Since you have a heater, just buy the under the dash mounted vintage lookin one.....

To me, Southern Air has the best prices on the same equipment.....

You may be able to piece one together, just watch costs..... Southern Air was the most bang for the buck

  7. I like my fresh air heater. Is there a cooling only stand alone unit that will attach under the dash?

I was gonna try an electric one out of a prius, but it wasn't very cheap.... I was then thinkin about those tube ones that you fill with ice on the window.... SHort of that, I am watchin to see, but don think so

  9. A stand alone electric air conditioner that bolts under the dash should be available.

I've never heard anything good about Southern Air. Their goofy looking control panel sucks. At least with Vintage Air you can use your original control panel. There is nothing truer then you get what you pay for.

  14. I have the Southern Air unit in my '46, and trust me, i've got nothing good to say about their unit either.
