"I think a male chauvinist is any guy whose glands are working right." -Shep

A Christmas Story is my favorite Christmas movie, and my second favorite is Remember The Night with Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck.

I also like to listen to the Jean Shepherd audio files from his broadcasting career. "Excelsior!"

Jean was a Ham Radio guy like me, and it was always interesting to hear him and Arthur Godfrey on the shortwave bands using their middle names as aliases to keep the crowd of well-wishers to a manageble size.

Ralphie as Adult: [narrating] Now, I had heard that word at least ten times a day from my old man. He worked in profanity the way other artists might work in oils or clay. It was his true medium; a master.

Exactly, the little town I grew up in was just like that. Coal fired furnaces, paint peeled houses, and those great alleys paved in ash (it was a coal and steel town) where it seemed all the real drama unfolded.
It might not look like much by todays standards, but it was great, I like things simple I guess. A Christmas Story was my childhood, and American Graffiti was my teen years,- then it all blew up.
I have a leg lamp, it's the only decorating I do for Christmas.

But did you catch later when he says I wonder what it is, and then, oh look, a ball... a blue ball.:D
I wore out my VHS copy this summer, had to get it on DVD.
Favorite movie ever, ask my wife, she hates it.

Great movie, and it's good to see there are more Shep fans on the HAMB. I'd love to get all the early '70s Car and Driver issues that ran his column, since it was every bit as good as the chapters of the books he wrote. Stuff like buying an old Packard sedan at a third-rate used car lot and finding a gangster's arsenal under the back seat...or the Hudson he had as a teen, the only car that made a noise underway like cussing him out.
I heard his radio stuff on WOR late at night for a year or so. Great storyteller in any medium.

I also love the fact that when the dad pulls the spare outta his trunk, it is completely bald, just like the narrator says, "once being made of rubber"!

"You should see it from out here!"

I've had the glow of electric sex in my front window for probably five Christmas's now.

"Damn hell you say, you won that?"

It is one movie that I actually thought they'd have to carry me out of the theater when it was over.
I literally had stomach cramps from laughing so hard.
To this day I still laugh like I'm seeing it for the first time.

A few years back a buddy of mine was trying to get a look in this old building - my buddy has a way of smelling "neat stuff". Anyways he tells me he's tried to catch someone their and has been unsucessful for months and months - he's telling me the story as we approach the building when he yells "holy shit" someone's there!! So he slams on the brakes and we pull on in. We see this OLD timer and a young kid trying to get a teens (?) Ford Stakebed truck started - the kid under the hood while the old timer cranks the motor - the kid also cranking the motor over manually ocassionally.

Anyways we pull over and just watch them until they finally get it started......

So what the ^&^%$ does this have to do with the movie???? Well after the old timer realizes that we are old car nuts he gives us the tour of the place. Inside he has several old cars - he points to one and asks if it looks familiar?? We don't make the connection at first - he has to remind us of the Movie - he had several cars that were contracted to be in the movie. He said it was the easiest money he ever made. Neat old guy - he had several projects lined up but didn't seem like any real progress was ever gonna be a reality. He also had several Indian Motorcycles - as well as an Origional Cobra with low miles and a wacked fender - smashed when it was just months old - this guy bought it then and never did anything with it.

Neat fella - turns out the kid was either his grandson or great grandson - I hope that kid inherited a BUNCH of his gramps stuff!!!

It was the 40's all over again, I lived that movie! haha. I havto watch it every year.

(Over the years I got to be quite a connoisseur of soap. Though my personal preference was for Lux, I found that Palmolive had a nice, piquant after-dinner flavor - heavy, but with a touch of mellow smoothness. Life Buoy, on the other hand---- ) I knew that flavor! YUCK!

  29. Just today told the wife I couldn't wait for christmas eve to watch at least 14 of the 24 hours on TBS. What a classic.

One of my faves, from adult Ralphie narrating: Aunt Clara had for years labored under the delusion that I was not only perpetually 4 years old, but also a girl. :D
