    Hey Ron,

You are after the LARGEST in attractions? For quite some time, now (2007), with the closure of the old El Toro Airfield and military base, a new idea came to the officials of the City of Irvine. So Cal has one of the largest tethered helium (not hot air) balloons and the first of its kind in the USA. It is one of the more popular tourist attractions in Orange County. The rest of the closed air base will be/is called the Great Park, modeled after the Central Park of NY idea.

“Launched in 2007, the bright-orange balloon offers up to 30 passengers at a time 360-degree views from its 1,810-pound gondola, weather permitting. Rides are offered four days a week. Initially offered at no cost, the park began charging per ride in April 2013, $10 per adult and $5 per teen. (Children younger than 13, with an accompanying adult, ride free.)

In 2013, more than 40,000 visitors went up in the balloon, which flies as high as 400 feet, tethered to the ground by a steel cable.”

In the middle of the exploding population of Orange County, lies an almost barren plot of land. On a daily basis, freeway travelers can’t help but see that giant orange balloon on the ground or 400 feet up in the air. That finished project…many years from now, will create an urban oasis of green trees, huge parks, surrounding homes, and businesses. It is a relief not to have giant jet planes landing right in the middle of suburbia. (old OCIR area)

It is perfect for a huge hot rod gathering like the big, national events all over the USA. There is plenty of space (688 acres), nearby hotels, motels, Airbnb locations, a short drive to the mountains, ocean, shopping galore, etc. right in the middle of the busiest freeway exchange in Orange County. (The I-5 and 405 interchange.)

    HISTORY

The site of The Farmers' Museum has deep roots in New York State's rural past. The land has been part of a working farm since 1813, when it was owned by James Fenimore Cooper. Judge Samuel Nelson, whose office is part of The Farmers' Museum Village, bought the farm in 1829 and raised sheep. Fenimore Farm, as it came to be known, changed hands again in the 1870s, when it was acquired by the Clark family.

In 1918, Edward Severin Clark built a showcase complex at Fenimore Farm for his prize herd of cattle. The barn, creamery, and herdsman's cottage designed by architect Frank Whiting in the Colonial Revival style and constructed of local stone still stand today and are an integral part of the museum. Today, they house museum offices, exhibition spaces, and public areas. The structures are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Farmers' Museum opened its doors to the public in 1944. At that time, the museum had 5,000 tools and objects, including important collections amassed by the Otsego County Historical Society; William B. Sprague, founder of the Early American Industries Association; and the Wyckoff family, one of Brooklyn's oldest farming families. Today the museum's collections number more than 23,000 artifacts.

The Farmers' Museum is a private, non-governmental educational organization. It is closely affiliated with its sister organization, Fenimore Art Museum.

  7. JNAKI, that BIG orange hot air balloon is very cool.It reminds me of a big orange souvenir shop. We visited, when we took the kids to Disney World. It was on route 192 at Kissimmee Florida. 20180115_070711.jpg

  8. When I was a kid, We usually had two cars. A station wagon that dad used for work, and a convertible, for Church and weekends. The wagon was also used for trips. Here's a couple large roadside Wagons. The one with the slide is in Riverfront Park, Spokane Washington. The other is at Elmwood park Illinois. and a couple station wagon pictures too. Both are kid friendly. ;) 20180115_140703.jpg 20180112_012615.jpg 20180115_135926.jpg 20180115_125828.jpg

All these pages but no one mentioned the world's largest hand dug well in Greensburg, KS. Of some note, the well was about the only thing left in Greensburg after an F5 tornado in 2007.

The well is 32' in diameter and about 110' deep. See http://www.bigwell.org/ for more information.

Santa Rosa New Mexico.... Cool museum for Ford and Chevy fans. Two Dodge trucks are left outside to rot out back... A Town Wagon and a Fuel Tanker...

Still worth a visit, I enjoyed the museum.

    Hey Ron,
Great find for a cool art exhibit. "How often would you see a giant dog peeing on the side of a building. It makes you wonder and smile at the same time."

Since it was located at the museum near our favorite outdoor shopping center, we have driven by it many times while in Newport visiting friends and locales. But, we missed that local exhibit back when it was on the front of the museum. It is near our stomping grounds at the Fashion Island Shopping Center. It is in the whole "Fashion Island." Now, it is called the Newport Center location. Ocean views abound as it is only a few blocks away.

The museum will be located here for now, but a huge site farther inland in Costa Mesa/Santa Ana border at the South Coast Metro Center has already been selected, but are still in negotiations on building the huge complex.
upload_2018-1-17_7-43-45.png This 35mm Ektachrome color slide photo was taken just a few blocks from the museum. (an experiment that had great results) Back then, when it was called the Newport Harbor Art Museum.

ASIDE: In 1953, this whole place was the original location of the Boy Scout Jamboree, when this area was nothing but scrub and trees. Time flies as does land development, especially in Orange County.

  24. { 61cad }Yes, It's at White Post Va. It's at the Historic four way intersection of Berry's Ferry rd. and White Post rd. 20171013_125202.jpg 20171013_124928.jpg 20171013_125234.jpg Col. George Washington put the white post there, in the center of the intersection. It was to give directions to the Berry's ferry, Stephens City, Battle Town, and the Greenway Court. The old gas station is at the same intersection also. It's currently being restored. I'll post a photo when it gets finished. Ron...

  25. In the fall of 1966 my wife and I moved to L.A.. Somewhere close to Yuma, Ariz. we came upon a roadside attraction called "The Thing". I believe the "Thing" was a mummy that was found by miners in southern Arizona. The sign said that it was between 5000 and 10,000 years old. The had the usual souvenirs, reptiles, ect. but the also had several cars that were quite interesting. They included a Model "T" that was built by Henry Ford for Barney Oldfield. It had won a cross country race from Moscow to Paris.
There was a 37 Rolls that belonged to Adolf Hitler and Al Capone's 32 Buick. I was 19 at the time and this whole trip was an experience I won't forget.

  26. It's not too far, maybe 5 hours Northwest of the Nickel.
