Tell him your intentions up front. If he wont sell, move on. If you absolutely have to have it, do what you have to to get it and when its yours, do what u want. Its your call bud you decide

I can't believe someone actually posted "Should I lie to some dude?" on the HAMB.

    Full moon or what?

If you patiently try to explain to him that there are already more than enough of them restored in private hands, in museums, in private or mfg collections, etc. to take care of any impending parades, funerals, or other civic processions, he might give in. Besides, stock it's just too slow to be safe! Gary

  9. Sounds like it might not be for sale, but you could always try 31 Vicky's approach!

Must be another fella wants us to tell him its OK to break the law.

Oh and I never lie, but I have been known to color it up a bit.

Would the guy even believe you that you've become an overnight ******** restorer?

Move on to another A. It's probably as mentioned not really for sale.

(It goes without saying, don't lie)

    Yep.

Sounds like the owner just likes to torment him with it.

And its working, because he has the hots for a car he hasn't seen, and doesnt know the price off...

You could go look at the car, noting all the non-stock service parts used, all the little changes that have been made, and any non-Ford accessories that might have been added.

Then take a look at the damage from driving into the ditch thirty years ago, plus any incidental repair work needed to bring it back to the condition it was in before being stored for such a long time.

When you talk to the owner, allow as how you wanted to buy an original stocker, and not a semi-wrecked hot rod jalopy. Make him an honest offer. He can make his choice.

Get a different friend (Friend A) to buy it from your other friend (Friend B) with the car.... friend A would promise Friend B not to rod it....

Then buy it from Friend A! And get the torches out!

didn't read all the responses but you really have to ask if you should lie about a car you've never seen and don't know the price of? really?

I recently went through the same thing. I found out about an A coupe stored in a ba*****t garage since 67 (see my photo album). I made a deal with the lady who owned it and I got a rollback in to get it out of the garage. As we were loading it on the truck she said "You're not going to hot rod it are you?". I didn't tell her we were but I didn't tell her we weren't either.

The car I got was sitting for 43 years - that's a life time for some! What's worse, hotrodding an old car or hiding it in a ba*****t garage for all that time? The car I bought came with 3 engines, 2 transmissions 9 wheels 2 rads, 2 rad shells, etc. I sold the parts to a restorer who in turn used them to get other Model A's on the road.

It's a simple economic equasion. Restoring an A will cost you more than they're worth. People that actually remember them as stockers are sadly, dying off. Hell, even the guys who hot rodded them are getting up there in years. Hot rodding them, if done the right way will at least help to even the score should you decide to sell later.

Should you lie to your co-worker? I wouldn't. Like many have already said, there are LOTS of A's out there!!

Best of luck with your decision.

Really - it's not for sale - he won't give you a price and hasn't invited to check it out. Do you know that it's not a pile of rusted out dog ****? Get real and go find one you like that is for sale....

Use self deception. I have used this alot in my past dealings with women. First you convince yourself that you really are attracted to them on a deep interpersonal level. Once you bone them a few times, you realize that they are not as great as you thought they were, they snore, have bad taste in music, they dont look as good naked as you thought they would, ect. ect. In fact, THEY have decieved YOU by hiding their shortcomings from you! Manipulative *****es! Then you dump them and move on to the next one. Convince yourself you really are going to restore it. Then buy it from him and realize that the car is rougher than you thought it was, far too rough to restore. Now that you have come to the conclusion that he has in fact burned you, and you are the injured party, you can go ahead and hack up the car.;)
PS. we need a psychotic smily here...

I would put it to stock, drive it for a year or two, then hot rod it. Thats what i want to do. Then i can drive it and build my ch***is and engine while driveing it.
