Found the terrible noise, and the reason my flatty wouldnt start. Put in a new 12 volt starter 2 years ago, and this was her after I finally got her pried out today[IMG]
Fortunatly, I had another one waiting to go into my new motor.

Anyone know if the bendix is a standard part? Got the starter at Macs, will any modern style bendix fit, or what do I need to know to look for a new one? Preferably a higher quality one?

    Thanks

Mac's may sell the starter component; I think I'd be surprised.
If you can find a local starter/alternator repair shop they may have the drive if they can ID the model.

  3. Am I seeing things, or is the bendix gear throwing out too far and bottoming on the ring gear?

I don't know the history of your car, but did the wrong flywheel (different offsets between pre-48 and post-48) get installed?

I just used the 6 volt standard one on my flatty with a 12 volt system. Starter would spin the motor about 300 rpm faster than it would idle. HAHAHA

Original good. My '48, in the family since new, never had any starter or bendix issues ever. Internet discussion sites now seem to have endless discussions of failures...it sure seems there's some bad stuff in the repro supply chain.

I did the same thing on my '32 pu. Worked great. I drove it three years before selling it.
