I had a guy tell me that I should use coupe fenders on my sedan model a.He says it's easy to modify the body to fit them and that it will fit wider tires.Has anybody heard of this, good or bad?
Front or rear? It would be easier to modify the fenders than the body, if you're talking about the rear. Get sedan fenders and save a lot of useless work.
I don't think it would be that easy. 28-29 Roadster-coupe-pickup fenders are the same. Sedan-touring-panel are the same. 30-31 Roadster-coupe-pickup fenders are the same. Sedan-touring-panel are the same. If you're bobbing the fenders on a 30-31 roadster you can use either 30-31 fenders or 28-29 fenders. 28-29's used on 30-31's will require drilling body or fender for the different bolt pattern. Using 28-29 fenders on the 30-31 gains you 1" in width measured at top center. The arc is the same. I note that the Speedway catalog lists both 28-29 and 30-31 stock replacement glass fenders as being the same width, but stock A fenders differ between the 29-29 and the 30-31. This could be true with the sedan-touring-panel fenders, but I don't know. Speedway does list the sedan et al fenders as being 7 1/4" wide and the roadster et al fenders as being 11 1/2" wide. It looks like a tough job, but if it's a do-able deal you'd pick up 3" in width very easy. From what I remember of a friends sedan, the fender is narrower at the top due to the sedan body flares out and the roadster et al bodies are pretty much straight up and down. Making me think, in the end you may not gain much at all. Measure twice, think about it a bunch....
Assuming we're talking REAR fenders; and the rear axle is out of say, an 8" Ford; using Coupe fenders isn't going to help. As C9 says above; the body on the sedans "slopes out." (the fender is narrower at the top) Coupes and Roadsters are the same width at both the top AND the bottom. To gain wider tire clearence on a sedan (Tudor or 4 Door) you either need to WIDEN a stock Sedan fender; or buy a fiberglas one made for the job. Modifying the body to take a Coupe or Roadster fender would only be worth the effort if you plan on BIG tire tubs and a narrowed rear axle.
Not knocking Edwardo's friend here, but a lot of interesting advice comes from those who think it would work, but have never really done it. I'd press for more details before I'd give this a try. Nothing wrong with the old tried and true way of splitting the fenders, welding in a new piece in the middle and finishing the metal.
i think hes talking about cutting the fenderwell out to use the coupe fender for extra clearance. like tubbing it
That makes sense. I'm guessing the very slightly larger arc at the center would still fit if the wheel well was stood up straight - or better yet, use a roadster/coupe wheel well - and the roadster/coupe fender set in.
?? Do you know something that C9 and I didn't read in his FIRST post ?? This is what he said; "I had a guy tell me that I should use coupe fenders on my sedan model a.He says it's easy to modify the body to fit them and that it will fit wider tires.Has anybody heard of this, good or bad?" Maybe he might have explained WHY his friend suggested using Roadster/Pickup fenders on his Sedan. I didn't see anything about "tubbing." Plus, if he was "tubbing" his "A" then some information of "How narrow the rear axle is", should have been included in the question. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE guys; when your asking technical questions -- can you put a little more information in your questions. We're not mind readers ya know!
dont know any more about his post than you dave, but he didnt mention widening the fenders ,just modifying the body.
Hey sorry bud. Didn't mean to "shoot" at you. I just took from your response that you might have known what Edwardo was up to! See your a "flathead man" too!
