Hot Rods A few updates on my Model A coupe

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Chris, Jan 11, 2009.

  1. This past late fall and winter I have been doing an engine transplant on my Model A, taking the old A engine out, and installing a souped up B engine. I got it all in and running, but had a small radiator leak so it's at the shop getting fixed. Thought I would show ya'll whats been going on.

I always had a leak at the steering box as well, so had it out and fixed that problem (seal installed), and also shortened the pitman arm 1 1/2" and bent the steering hoop off the backing plate down, making steering the car a lot easier!

While I was at it, I fabbed a timing pointer out of one for a 292 Ford. Model A's and B's do not have timing marks, so this will help a lot in the future!

Thats it for now, I'll keep ya'll updated when she's back to runnin again!

  8. I'll never get tired of seeing the work you've been doing.

  9. The evolution of your coupe is always an interesting read. That engine looks great, now if winter would just go away,so you could get out there and drive it.;)

You do have shocks for that little guy, don't you?

Nice ride, a classic, dare I say it, period piece!

  11. No, drove it all last year with no shocks...but that is also on the plans to do this winter. It's pretty bouncy right now :D
Thanks for the coment, I really am going for "period"

  12. Chris, whadya mean they don't have timing marks? You just can't see 'em. See that little pin with all the paint worn off? :) Keith

Chris, That looks GREAT as ever.I'm goin' to have to have me a 4 banger powered ''A'' next and most of that is YOUR Fault!!!!!!:D:D:D
I want to hear it RUN!

    Nick.

  18. Yeah, and do you know how hard it is to get it on TDC with that pin...by yourself :D Neat idea for sure, but I can barly tell when it's in or out (crude humor aside)! I coulda drilled the hole deeper in the timing gear I guess, but wasn't thinkin ahead ;)

    I'll race you! :)

    what transmission are you using?

How is the dropped axle with reversed eyes working?
When I did that my tires hit the underside of the fender and I had to use regular eyes.

I've never needed shocks on the front but they were mandatory on the rear

You are talented in the work you have done.
You are equally talented in your restraint in the things you haven't screwed with. Cool car.

show off....haha Killer Chris....Hope I get to see it this year...

  25. I have a 1937 three speed in it. The axle and spring work great, no problems with clearance. Your are right as the front seems real stable, but the rear is super bouncy! Gotta watch out for bumps in the road :D

Way cool box top. Always loved the fendered 5 windows. Looking good. Keep on in the same direction and keep the pics and updates coming.

  27. Wow Chris,
Its perfect! Well almost, if it was driving down the road instead of waiting for the thaw it'd be perfect:D Nice work man, details on the mill please.

  28. It's a B block with a counter balanced crank, lightened flywheel, Winfield SU-1R cam, stock valves and pistons, Winfield head, Burns intake with two 81's, header, and a 30's vintage Mallory distributor. The drivers side of the block has had a plate welded over it (extending the water jacket down to the bottom of the block), thats why it looks a little funny. The oil pan also has a ton of brass fins brazed front to back...I'm thinkin this engine used to be in a boat or something and they were really worried about it running hot. I know nothing about it's past life, I found it in a barn and got it in a horse trade. It did not have any speed equipment on it, was just the block, internals, stock head and pan.

Due to the block being altered, the stock water outlet is now gone and mover to the rear lower corner, so I had my friend Shaun tig up this tube that goes to the lower radiator hose.
