has anyone found a good material that's not to restrictive on air flow and holds up, I've searched for recommendation's and found no good answer's, Thanks
You just a thread on this a couple of weeks ago…..with a bunch of answers https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/stromberg-scoop-filters-cant-locate-any-help.1330267/
OK, that was for A/F pre made, I was looking for making my own idea"s---- if I violated some rule please tell me and I won't post....
Hello, We had three carbs on the 1958 Impala 348 motor. We tried the three scoops and three chromed cans. But for all time street driving and performance, nothing was better than the stock three carb air cleaner cover. But, we did try ordinary household screens. We had some screens that were just replaced with the newish flexible plastic material. So, we had the old style stiffer metal stuff. It was easier to cut and shape into the cover/ or opening area. The air flow was good, but it was not the best. So, they came off. The plastic version of household screen material was easier to work with and seemed to be better for weeks. Cans did better than the scoops. the scoops seem to gather anything and that included water. not good. Eventually, those three scoops were replaced with three cans, but the filtering material was used. Finally, I decided that chrome caps or scoops were not the look I was after. Everyone had a chrome scoop or cans on their carb(s). So, I had the top plate of the stock Impala air cleaner chromed to give the engine compartment some contrast. By this time, the chrome valve covers got a Moon Breather and now the engine compartment looked a lot better than stock or three chrome scoops or cans. IMHO Jnaki Some people like to have three scoops, but they do act like a funnel and bring in and trap a ton of “stuff” getting sucked into the engine compartment in all sorts of road travels. So, be aware of that fact. The performance was designed at the factory with the large three carb air cleaner and replacing the filter was a no-brainer. No homemade filter screens, just the good old fashion auto parts store replacement filter if one drove to the desert on the weekend, or the beach... YRMV
There's nothing that will provide good filtering AND good flow in that small area. panty hose may flow well enough, but will not stop any dust, and it doesn't take much larger dirt to clog it up. Finer materials that actually catch dust will not have a large enough total area to flow enough air. Just look at a regular folded paper air filter, cut it open and unfold the paper to see how big it actually is. That's what you want.
Or you could be original and build a air cleaner assembly that holds a oval filter like six pack cars used. Two pieces of aluminum , leave the filter showing, polish it how you like , two or three wing nuts to hold it on. Function over form or not ?
Maybe consider small engine filters. Such as, chainsaw, string trimmer or lawnmower filters. May have to trim to fit but WTH.
