    a Paint Gun that is. . .:D

This may not seem like a big deal to all y'all veterans out there, but I'm pretty dayum proud of myself.

In just under a week I've managed to dechrome 3/4 of my car (1 day), strip, sand and epoxy seal my roof (2 days), strip, sand, and epoxy seal my deck lid (2 1/2 days) and shot the epoxy sealer on my deck lid. First time using a paint gun, and other than one major run, I think I did pretty good. . .

    Naked Edsel:

Said goodbye to her "tramp stamp"

    S****in' off the old primer:

Found a pretty wicked little spot of deep surface rust/pitting, had to cure it overnight with Rust Killer:

Of course, since I have no garage, parked her outside and awoke this morning to find that a light rain had turned my bare metal into a loverly mess. . .so more sanding

My grrl, DaPhantom, came on by and helped out a ton! Thanks doll! :D

Bare and ready to be shot

    A girl with a gun. . .my first time. . .

The results, thus far. . .

And someday soon. . .she'll look something like this (James D was kind enough to photoshop a diffferent colour scheme for me; going with black/silver so I don't have change my interior; will bring the blue back in with pinstriping and a new "tramp stamp").

I won't bore y'all with the continuing saga; she's a big car and I don't want to waste bandwidth with posting a "look I painted another panel" update.

But today was my first day using a paint gun.

Today was a good day. :D

Congrats on not being afraid to try to paint. I know there are alot of guys that wouldn't tackle this type of project.

Great job! Are you using a single edge razor blade in a holder to strip the paint? That works real well on flat panels, sometimes a heat gun helps. Don't forget to clean your paint gun, post more photos when you make more progress.

Yuppers. Went thru about 723 razor blades so far ;):D . . .works pretty dayum well. . .

Hand sanding & a DA with 80 grit after that. . .haven't used a heat gun yet, but may need to at some point (have used heat guns on wood & flooring projects before, but not on metal -- I used to own a 30s bungalow and completely restored all the hardwood floors and original sash windows myself).

What's the difference in using a heat gun on metal to remove paint vs. using one on wood?

In terms of this project, I am extremely fortunate to be under the supervision of psycopainter (Ritchie Holcomb) here in Austin. He's been doing paint and body forever. . .his shop is next to Crushproof.

He's walking me thru every step of the process, and I'm doing the sanding/prep myself; he'll be doing the body work and shooting the paint.

Thanks for all the encouragement. . .I really appreciate it. . .especially coming from those of you who have doing this since the dawn of time :D

At this point it seems like "Oh, I'm just shootin' epoxy primer, nothing special," but I am proud of the work I've put into her. . .and the knuckle I busted the **** out of in the process ;)

Only 9 million more hours of sanding to go. . .;):D

ROCK!!! Our all grrls cc will be starting to do more outreach programs (fingers crossed) with high school age girls in the area in the spring (if all goes well), and I hope to put together a slide show showing the grrls in my club doing projects like this to encourage more young women to get involved. . .

You can show her the pics on this thread too, if you'd like. . .

Looking good. You had it wooped as soon as you picked up the gun. Theres not a whole lot of things you can mess up on a old car that you cant fix. Just doing it, thats where its at. Keep us posted.

Sounds like you've got a good restoration background if you've done a house already. The heat gun/razor blade method works differently depending on the paint and age of it. I once pulled a two month old Centary paint job off a sports race car in no time, but a ten year old Rolls paint job took forever. Both jobs kept their original primer and all the filler under it.

LOL! PM me, maybe we can work out a deal. . .Hmmmm, I guess that means I need to get a pool, huh? :D

Good to know. My father does custom carpentry, taught me a great deal, so I'm more familiar with woodworking (oh, lord, I know that'll spawn some comment about me working with wood ;):D), but metal seems less "tempermental."

Now if you learn to weld to you are the perfect woman!

Great job, it can look like a hard project, I did my first paint this year, prep, read the instructions for all the primer and paint and life is good.

Tell your friend next time to get mechanics gloves during sanding, saves the fingers!

Keep us up to date on the happenings! Great job!:)
