When putting "55" Chevy headlights on a "50"Chevy, What size rod should i use to build the eyebrow? Do I want the top of the fender to slope forward or build it up to be level? Will this look good with fender chrome? I kinda like it!
Hey, To deside which version of the mounting of the '55 Chevy headlamp door you like try this. Go to a craft store and score some modeling clay (I've used plaster of paris for the same thing, but it's kinda messy and not as quick), now mount the door. Pick the straight top look and tape the door in a straight line with the top of the fender. With the clay, fill all the gaps between the door and the fender and smooth and blend in the clay just as if it were metal or filler. Now, stand back and study the mounting from all angles. Now try the lower position, and again ,study the shape. Ya, you can do the same thing with tape & cardboard, but the clay gives a more ''real-world'' look and feel to the study. Your head would look good on a pike "
I always use 3/8" rod when forming panels. You'll have to form the lip of the eyebrow with a thicker rod most likely, but 3/8" is a nice workable size.
i used the whole headlight area from the 55 chevy fender on my shoebox for 2 reasons, i like the thickness on top, and i dont like when the bottom of the headlight bezel is right up against the fender, therefore, when using the chevy fender, the fender is built up underneath the headlight bezel(makes it look more like the fender was made for the headlight bezel and just pasted on with a fender cap on top) I'm not sure if im explaining this right, ill have to include pictures... the slope is definately neccessary, has to be natural looking....
theres a flat teal-ish/aqua-ish, '50 or so chevy sedan i believe...it has 55 chevy headlights, shoebox taillights, buick sidetrim, scoop in the quarter panel, 53 chevy grillshell i believe with an imperial grill??(if memory serves me right) i don't have pictures of it, but maybe someone else does, the headlights look real good in that car..it was at this past years KOA show in gettysburg.. EDIT: it's in the background of this pic of my car...anyone got good pictures of it?
Personally, I think the stock radius of the 55 brows looks a little too "heavy" on an earlier car. I'd use rod and form it, I think that gives you more control over the final look.
