This could have been done in the shop but, there's a big advantage in being able to bake the different colors.

If we weren't concerned about authenticity we would do the scallops on the hood, fenders and ¼'s during this session. The modern way is to bury everything in clear. Because everything was hard lined back then we will do them after the car is cut and buffed. In doing the dash I discovered that this urethane lays down without much of an edge. I would have loved to see the originals (Ala Kart, Kopper Kart etc) with their hard lines.

    Looks good Jerry!

I don't know what the hell FedEx is doing with those pipes. I'm trying to get to the bottom of it.

With the color being probably the one focal point there was a mighty struggle to get it right. I'm showing just some of the examples that you can see, now that there are a lot of pics available, thanks to Rik Hoving. So the problem becomes obvious. But the solution isn't. How can there be so many colors of the same car? The photogs can probably explain this for us.

At first Jr was reluctant to say much more than Sam Bronze, a copperish marroon. Dan and I thought that pic #4 was the closest because it looked so different (a dirty pink?). Finally Jr gave me Dick, peep, Jackson's phone # and that fixed everything (post #74). But even now it's difficult to pick up the copperish part of this color with a pic (#7). It does look the most like pic #1.

I don't envy you this task at all, Jer. All the visual evidence is third and fourth generation interpretations of the original color.

Back in the day, color transparency materials were not nearly as precise as the digital images of today. There were two major choices: Kodachrome and Ektachrome.

Kodachrome favored red/yellow while Ektachrome favored blue/green. Photographers would select the film to enhance the subject matter: Kodachrome made reds and yellows "pop" while Ektachrome made blues and greens deep and rich.

Your photo #1, the magazine cover, was probably taken with Kodachrome, while Andy Southard's photo #6 was probably shot with Ektachrome.

This probably explains the radical difference in paint color between the two photographs...but didn't make your job any easier, did it!

The final color you selected is excellent! The car really jumps, and I think that's probably what Junior had in mind when he selected the color in the first place.

Can't wait to see it assembled, trimmed and striped! Outstanding work!

    :)

Thanks for the technical info Eric. By the way I did send Jr those pics of your exhaust setup. Jr's reply was "yup, thats it". Thanks.

I know when Mark (ChopOlds) was mixing up the copper color for the Kopper Kart, we ended up calling it a modern rendition of the color we saw. We ran into the same problems as you, though not as drastic. Different versions, limited photos, and using our interpretations of the colors we saw in the photos. I don't envy you.... or Mark!!!

But it DOES look great!!!! When someone comes up to the car, they won't say hey thats the Junior Conway car, cept its two shades darker and the gold is wrong... They'll say hey its the Junior Conway coupe.

Well...I think your right Bill. Iv'e become detached from this build in the sense that I'm becoming consumed by the need to capture that time/place frame with this car.Iv'e been exceptionaly fortunate to have access to Jr and Dick Jackson. After having said that its probable that this excersise would have fallen far short without them. Sorry, I know that "modern renditions" are neccesary but I dislike them intensely.

Well we're back home up on jack stands again. The stainless is being finished. That will have to be installed before the upholstery is installed. The skirts have to be painted. There's a little wiring left to be done and the engine needs to be fired (with the new Fenton equipment). We're going to cut and rub it before it goes to the upholstery shop. Oh, I forgot to add, plus the "misc. stuff".

r side. I thought Appleton spotlight brackets were marked with an r (and a #) or an L (with a #) for r and L side. Iv'e been told recently that the r side has a L991 #. So lets see what youv'e got and we'll go from there. Thanks by the way.
