My ex brother in law gave me a call a couple of weeks ago. His father passed awhile back and they were just getting around to cleaning out his shop. He was wondering if I wanted any parts. I went up and purchased a bunch of misc car stuff from him, nothing exciting. Well his dad was also in the process of building a 56 Coupe De Ville. All the body work done, an ugly color paint, freshly rebuilt 331 (?) etc etc. but still a long way from being road worthy. He offered it up to me for what is an ok price, but I'm neck deep in some other projects right now and I don't really have the extra cash to pick this up at his asking price. I got to thinking I could sell a couple of parts off the Caddy I wont have a need for, bringing my cost down. Then maybe it would be worth picking up and putting away for a future project. My questions...What do you think I could get for a fresh rebuilt 331, all stock never been back in since the rebuild? The car also has the continental kit option. What would something like that be worth to a restorer? I wouldn't be using either one of those. Course keeping the engine for something else would be cool, but I'm trying to figure out a way to make this work for me cost wise. Thanks for any help. Mark
If the continental kit is complete with nice chrome it would fetch a nice chunk of change,if there are duplicate trim and chrome pieces, they will bring good money also. I spent a small fortune on just a handfull of chrome trim pieces for my 56 coupe. A 56 should have a 365 motor Get that coupe bought ,see if the ex brother in law will take payments
Ok thanks for that info. Can anyone tell me is the 365 a popular engine for swapping into a hot rod? I was thinking the value on this motor around 1500 bucks? I know what it worths get crap here on times...but Im just trying to figure out a way to pick this car up for a decent final price. Thanks again for any insights.
if the motor is stock, i dont think you'll get a lot of cash for it-- unless someone really needs it locally and its in great shape you can prove. i've gotten my past couple 331/365/390 motors for pretty much free, when guys get silly and decide to pull them for an SBC swap or whatever... -scott noteboom
Engine is not in it, its on on an engine stand just waiting. I can probably come up with the receipts for the rebuild. Ill look for some Caddy resto type sites online somewhere and see what else I can find out. Thanks for the responses and the views.
