I think I know whats wrong, but not sure. What do y'all think?

I have a 283 that I changed the heads on. After I made the change it is running like sh_t!! it is not even building enough vacuum to operate the power brakes. The engine was running great before I changed the heads. After the swap, it starts easy enough but it just won't run smooth or build enough vacuum. I think I have the distributor off a tooth or two.

    What do you all think?

well you did something wrong. Distributor concern sounds like it could be it, Misplaced intake gasket maybe? Pull the plug, bring it up to tdc on the number one cylinder and check for distributor position. If that looks good then start the engine and spray some carb cleaner around the intake gasket area and see if the engine speeds up if not the intake is not leaking there.
Timing? too much retard will do that. Wires in the right order?

Check for vacuum leaks, did you use the rubber end rails?
Timing should match up with prior settings if the distributor is timed OK.
    Valve adjusted correctly? Noises?
Kind of need some more info, to help.

tim, take a propane torch and turn it on,don't light it ,and run it around the intake and carb base gaskets. It will bring the idle way up if they are leaking. It won't check the ubderside tho.

What heads did you install. Could have to large of a chamber and large runners that can reduce vac. signal.

It probably wouldn't hurt to check your compression as well.

My money's on either the carb base gasket or the intake manifold gaskets...
