so... (yes i read the whole tech article) 51 303 (stock bore and everything) #10 heads (not worked over, stock getting rebuilt) Vertex Mag Sharp 3x2 with rochesters (progressive linkage) ive heard the 303 cam with the 1.8 rockers makes decent power over a stock 324 cam from a few people but might wanna confirm.. if i can afford a cam, what should i be looking for on specs? i see a lot of old cams with no specs that mae me nervous to try em .. also, i think i remember the 56 cam or a cam for a 56 wont go into a 303 its a lil larger, correct me on this if im wrong too. just tryin to plan to make a lil more power and have a lil more fun with what i have. thanks fellas
If you get a cam with no specs, take it to your engine guy, they can measure it and tell you whats what. I just won the Howards cam on e-bay for my mate, he is doing just that. But he wants his 324 to slow the revolution of the earth when he puts his foot into it.
Yes on the 49-55 journal sizes being smaller. 56-58 cam is the same length but won't fit. 59-up cam is longer also, so watch out what you buy at auction. A "too much lift" hot hydraulic cam that was made for a 54-55 324 in NOS can be detuned a little by staying with the 1.5 early rockers. Reduces the lift but not the duration. I believe DW said max lift at valve for stock-piston 324 was 5.85", but I don't know about a 303 with *10 heads as far as piston clearance-to-valves.
I have my cams ground and rockers reconditioned at Delta Camshaft in Tacoma WA very good work and very fast turn around, next day on most work.
Delta Camshaft (253) 383-4152 they can quote you a price and estimated turn around, tell them what combo you are running and they can recomend a grind.
