44 is roughly equivalent to 111.76cm, so lets just call it a 112... I don't know how to convert the DD cup size.... Does the metric system also infect the alphabet?

for the most part i have accepted th emetric system, i wish there were better places to buy metric bolts localy, the differences in european and japanese thread pitch can be anoying, and the fact most wrench sets leave out a 16mm.

  3. This thread is hilarious. My girlfriend was born and raised in the Ottawa area, and was taught 'Murrican units of measure (we both gradiated high school in '76), so she STILL has problems figuring out how far it is from Gloucester to anywhere (like Toronto for that car show last winter -- "Hell, it's five hours..let's go!"), but if I say that I drive 54 miles a day to and from work here in Kansas City, she instantly knows what I'm talking about. When I say it was 50 degrees here, she knows that it's a little chilly and not blazingly hot.

I'm moving up there next year and we've been looking at condos; you know what every single one of those listing are measured in? Feet and inches and floor space is in square feet.

Squirrel: If you want to take your measurement suggestion to the extreme, instead of octal we should use hexidecimal, then that aforementioned cut of 2x4 would be 3'-F/10"!

Funny stuff. I read somewhere but can't rememeber where that the basis of the Metric system was the distance fro the equator to the pole or poles. This was calculated before any sophitacted measuring equipment was invented and the calculation is not correct. Therefore at some point it will require a new system to correct the little bit that it's off. I don't know how the genious' figutr it ou any way cause. I know that the earth is not completly round and is kinda Egg shaped. Based on the fact that the earth is shaped like an egg it must be one of a dozen, and me even be part of a bakers dozen.

It's not hard to Phatom in the US that when you get in your Rod to get the litere of Soda and a gallon of Milk, 10 weiners, one pack of8 hot dog buns, A pound of bacon and a dozen eggs a pack of Marlboro 100's or 72's, (not a lot of people even know what that stands for). Then matches that are made of wood that is measured in cords and Lumber feet.

No wander the world is egg shaped one half of it is made in inches and feet (the correct half) and Cubits, the other half is measured in CC,MM and stones.

By the way from the tip of my index finger to the first line is exactly 1", second line is 2"s, the 3rd line is 3 inches. Please don't ask me to cut my fingers to their metric equivalants what ever they are.

1 pound is worth more than a 1 dollar but if you have a pound Gold it's worth more than a pound in England.

What is the metric equivilant to "Horse Power" that is a bogus measurement of moving something 1 foot?

I recently replaced some rubber gas lines with 5/16 ridgid on my old motorhome and all the inverted couplings required a 15 mm wrench when the flare nuts were all 1/2".

As a side note O/T, if I hadn't learned about the importance of double flaring from right here at The HAMB I'd be up shit creek.

    Brian,

It's not a metric problem but rather a Canadian problem.

My dad came from Canada in the late 20s long before the Metric switch over. He taught me how to read a ruler. He would convert 3'-15/16" to 3' plus 3/4" plus 3/16", or the simple way a 1/16" under 4' and that's how I now measure things too.

Also one time he had me turn on the garden hose to water the lawn, he was on the other side of the house. So he says turn it on a Hair; so I turn it on just a little bit. He says Did you turn it on yet? I said ya, a Hair. So we go through this proceedure about three times, and he gets mad a says "What are you doing?". Well I finally ask him "What do you mean by a Hair?" and he says..... turn it about 2 inches:confused:

The U.S.A. will at best be a hybred inch/metric system. We can NEVER totally convert over to the metric system. For God's sake our roads are layed out in square miles. Don't think they will ever move all the country roads.
It would take billions to change all tof the machine tools that have inch style ball screws.
    etc.
I too am a toolmaker / machinist for GM.
Some of us run the machines in metrics. Some run in inch. We have both inch and metric cutters. Use metric prints but sometimes have english dimmension converted to metric.
It'll never be fixed. Just get use to it.

I have a Popular Mechanics magazine from 1918, the editorial is about how the US must convert to the metric system in the next 5 years if it is to compete in the world market........... yeah we were all over that weren't we.

I have had to work with both systems every day for the past 20 years, I'm used to it, no big deal for me. I had one old timer that worked for me that had got so used to metric that when we ran a job in "standard" he had to convert it to metric.

I was an apprentice when we changed from imperial to metric in new zealand. The tradesmen were having trouble and us apprentices enjoyed lording it over them for a while. Things quickly settled down, but only after a lot of complaining, people who used measuring (metrology) devices for a living simply got on with the job. In N.Z. if you go to a hardware shop it's hard to get an imperial bolt or nut, you have to go to a specialist supplier, just like we had to do for metric fixings before the change-over.
The aussies on the other hand fluffed it, when people complained (it's all too hard... my head hurts) they caved in on the fixings, pipe threads etc., but still kept all drawing dimensions in the new metric system. Two generations later we get blank looks from aapprentice-boys when we send them off to get some 3" x 1/2 inch UNC bolts. They quite rightly point out the drawing specifies 75mm x 12mm Metric Thread.
We grin and bear it when we explain (the unexplainable) yes son, even though you've cut your plate 250mm x 150mm and drilled 4x 12.5mm dia. holes in it you are going to use 3" x 1/2" bolts. And by the way you're going to tighten them to "Newtons" not "Foot Pounds". Then the bloody questions start, what's an inch? whats UNC stand for? how do I tighten the bolts with my foot. Then the killer! my mum and dad said that tradesmen play tricks and practical jokes on apprentices, so I'm not going to the shop to buy your stupid bolts.
OK son I'll wrte a list for you to give to the hardware man, and on your way back call in at the Bakery for me and ask the nice ladies for a "randy tart"! now here's your money and on your way.
After all these years if I need a small piece ground or cut off a bar or I need somthing reduced or expanded by a small amount I'll still say take an 1/8th off that. Some old habits die hard.

BTW a major cock-up did occur with a joint project between the USA and Russia on a space project. I think it was the first time a Russian space-craft was to dock with an American craft in space. During the negotiations the americans insisted on the imperial measuring system, the russians reluctantly agreed. The result was the two craft couldn't dock. The russians had misinterpreted the dimensions, red faces all round as the russians, not quite sure of themselves had repeatedly asked the americans to confirm the russians calculations, which they did.
America is the only country left in the world to still use the imperial system. I like the irony, the americans fought very hard to overthrow the tyranny of their english masters, and yet they still use an imperial measurment system based on nothing more than, a certain english kings first metatarsal on his thumb was the equivalent of one inch and twelve of them was the length of his foot.

Probably a Kilo-watt (1000 watts), and as an exact conversion, just remember .746, or 3/4 of a KW equals 1HP...
    so 75KW equals 100HP
And after wandering the mind's catacombs, If you raise a basket containing one coulomb of charge (an amp's worth) against a force of 1 volt (elec. field) for one meter of resistance/distance (Not electric, simply a force), then I think you have done one (1) Watt's worth of work.

The Brits switched to metric, so we have to be different from them! even if it means using their own (abandoned) measuring system.

They don't have randy tarts at bakeries here, unfortunately. No one knows the real meaning of "randy" or "tart"

This was beginning to sound like a medical term! Then I was just glad to not need "the laxative" each time one needed nuts and bolts!

My previous jingo-istic rant aside, what most of the world doesn't understand is this: America is the largest economy in the world, and one of the largest countries in the world. Hell, I've read that California, a state, if it were to be its own country, would be the 6th largest economy in the world.
For another country to simply convert to metric, it's like one of our states doing it. Even when Canada changed over, what was the total population of the country? How many big cities had to do it? We've got a lot more geography to cover than most countries, and a whole lot more industry to convert.
In talking with people from other countries, I don't think most countries grasp how big the US is...When you can drive the length of Britain in a day and a half, it doesn't make sense to them that I can drive leave from Atlanta (not even close to the farthest east in our country), drive west for three days, cover 2,500 miles, and still be two states shy of the Pacific ocean. It's more than 24 hours of driving to go form North to South border.
The population of Canada is a little over 33 million today, while the top 9 cities in the US alone come in at more than 22 million. That's just 9 cities. When Canada converted, I'd be surprised if their population was equal to the East Coast of the US.

  18. Brad54---It was a political decision, and it was not popular with 95% of the Canadian people. We have always suffered from political leaders who want to "make a statement" during their political tenur, hoping that will ensure that their name lives on with the "masses" after thy have left the political stage. The fact that their name may live on as "that asshole" never seems to deter them!!!:D :D :D

sorry squirrel, I didn't factor in the "my big swingin dick is bigger than yours"... not a bad point.

Not quite sure what the equivalent terms are in the US, so here goes,
Randy = Horny, Tart is a type of cake (cookie)? with a cookie base and sweet jam or fruit on top. It is also slang for a prostitute or a women who puts it about a lot. So when a boy asks a women in a bakery for a randy tart..... you can imagine what happens. :D ;)

Brad54...... it's not a question of size, if thats all it was China with 2.4 billion people would never had converted. If the US wanted to convert no new problems would arise, you would of course have a lot of people with a lot of questions, but on the other hand you would have a lot of people to answer those questions. I'll even come over as a consultant at $400.00 per hour.
BTW every time you use your currency you are counting in a metric system. And the US led the world on that one.

oh, I got the "randy tart" joke! not too many yanks do though.

can you imagine how much fun we'd have doing home remodeling if building materials went metric?

About 15 years ago a frend of mine was in a popular band and the wanted a hot air balloon.
The had the drawings made here in holland but had it build in the UK.
the price quote was a bit high but they wanted it realy bad so had it build.
They ended up with the largest special shape hot air balloon at that time.
The drawing was in cm those brits tought it was in inches.
so the balloon was 2.54 times as large as ordered

The source of those errors is the derived mass unit itself. The kilograms is a base unit, while the slug is a derived unit, which makes the metric system much easier to use in physics, imo. "Pounds mass" and "pounds force" is just needlessly confusing.

1 Newton = 1 kg*(m/s^2), so the base units work out nicely in the context of F=ma, where the acceleration of gravity is 9.811 m/s^2. Simple.

However, as a mechanical engineer all my drawings are dimensioned in feet and fractional inches, and I graduated from university in 2001.

My brother ,a baker, gets that every year and has done for 30+ years as the new boys( and girls) get told to buy a randy tart, 1/2 dozen cross nuts ( croissants) etc . Some kids never learn,he reckons the ones comming to the shop now are being told to do that by tradesmen caught out 10 years ago...:D

brianangus, some funny stuff. I remember here in the USA there was a push when I was a kid to transition to the metric system. I even seem to remember some street signs with both units (I think?). I had to learn both systems through school and then in college as a civil engineering student had to learn both systems too. Of course after college when I got into the real world, I quickly found that nobody that I dealt with used the metric system. Other than my dual set of tools in the garage, I never end up dealing with the metric system..

And what is up with tires sizes? I mean they use both systems!!
