I was looking for SBC heads on an on line site. I found an ad in Chevrolet parts that reads: Old mercury, must sell. The picture: email sent and response given: It's set up for front mount SBC, its complete and rust free. Been parked since 65. I lost my storage and need it gone. I'll be at the barn Saturday, the address is:" ". I spy a shaved hood and figure its worth going to look even if its a 4 door. I meet the owner, a fella my age 52 +/- who inherited his dads cars. The door opens and I step in. He says the price for the Merc, I tell him its time we go have a coffee. We do very little arm wrestling. I say, 32's and mercs are Icons but this isnt a Barrett Jackson car. He agrees he comes down, I go up and the dance is complete. A hell of a nice guy who lost his storage and wanted to be sure it went to a good home. His Dad built it, it ran a 327 powerglide and was in the ISCA show circuit in Canada in the late 50's, early 60's. He promises to find pictures and the dash plaque. The decal remains in the vent window. All three are coming home on Tuesday and Wednesday. PS, the truck and Galaxy were sold today. I had said, no more projects......oh well, the road to hell is paved in good intentions.
I didnt sleep last night... visions over and over. built it... chop it... put a drive train in and drive as is... round and round and round. Its incredible CARma. I had just completed my chopped shoebox, it was picked up by a magazine and I was in heaven when blamo, I find a 55 Nomad i could afford. The choice had to be made. Follow and fulfill my 35 year dream or give up and sell my dream shoebox. I had to let it go. I decided I was done... then this and thankfully I can enjoy them both.
Wow, proves that sometimes it is good that people do not know how ad for cars, parts. be great if he finds the pics, etc.
The last one I found was a more door back in 11.2010. That one turned into a runner real quick as it was complete. This bad boy's going to be around for a while to come. May just end up parking it in the shop and looking at it till the funds improve.
Fred - good to see you back at it! You have a real knack for finding good project cars, and this find is a real score. Look forward to the updates. Steve
Thanks everyone. I had long decided I wouldnt find a 2 door merc I could afford so I had taken it off the bucket list. I hadn't even given it any thought for the last 3 years then BLAMMO.. there it is. Maybe if I start thinking the same way about a 32 3 window....
Eye's going blind looking at every possible thread.. getting ideas, maybe too many. Tomorrow heading to start bringing them home.
It's a balmy -15 C this morning. Perfect weather for pulling home the Merc. I will do Steve, camera charged and in the ready.
Heads spinning in so many directions right now that I'm going to take a cooling off period before I do a thing. Cooling off as in at least a couple months to set some goals and a real plan. Grills, wheels, signal lights, chops, no chops, motors, colours, interiors... so many things I've thought of doing in the past, no I have to make up my mind and do it. .... Never thought I'd say that.
Didn't say stock, just unchopped. I love the looks of an unchopped 2 door Merc, a rarity in this day and age. Lowered, black, mid 50's build.
