Hot Rods A model chassis with 9 inch

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 54_coupe_ute, Apr 12, 2009.

  1. Hi guys ..Ive purchased an old school bucket on a A model ch***is. it runs a Y block and a cusso 3 speed, and a shortened 9 inch. it was built with the diff housing centred in the ch***is. which means the pinion is off set to the right. so therefore the drive shaft runs on a mean angle to the gearbox. if the pinion is centred the housing will be off centre and there will be a clearance problem with the original cross member. ( it has an original rear spring mounted in front of the diff ) is it acceptable to run it with the pinion off centred or will it chew up uni joints. any help would be much appreciated thanks

My GTO has a 9" that's set up the same way.

Housing is centered, pinion is offset to one side by about 1.75".

No issues, I've been running the same driveshaft and U-joints for over a decade. During most of that time the car was used for drag racing with slicks and transbraked TH400.

A lot of cars have the engine offset an inch or so off center from the factory. U-joints stay lubed up better and last longer when there is some movement in the U-joints, chewing them up won't even be a concern.
